For cheaper you could whitebox a solution but then it'd be network only.

Edit: why not network it? I've seen you ask for local connections but no reason for it.

Needs to be DAS. NAS isn't nearly fast enough for the data. also Macbooks are Wifi only making it worse.

In my experience you'll have better performance from gigabit ethernet than you will with USB3. eSATA would be better than both, but not by much. Can't speak to thunderbolt.

Exactly what I was thinking... he thumbed his nose at NAS - I was assuming a 1 Gbe connection - I suppose if you really need the slight edge eSATA can provide.. fine.. or thunderbolt assuming it's even faster.. but damn.. I've been pretty happy with 1 Gbe as long as the controller in the NAS is decent.

What are you running over it that would test the speed at all? The thing that I find with USB3 is that I never have anything to hook to it that can use the speed so it is all wasted.

Serious question, what can? What do you need bandwidth wise for that? 2 Gb? 10 Gb?

While sure people like Scott want to do this crazy 4/8K video stuff, that's either a maxed out prosumer thing, or clearly mid class business stuff, and you should be through some real capital at solving that problem, not chump change.

Over a NETWORK, 10GigE will do that just fine. And there are several faster options than that if needed.

If you are dealing with a video production business, which is a very common thing, you need this all of the time.

Yep. To bad that would be way to expensive..

Heck 10GB wifi would be really nice too.

The first one I found is $700. But that's a super high end board with dual 10GigE built in and able to handle 128GB of RAM from 2014. If you are doing high end video processing, a few hundred extra for your Mobo is going to be expected anyway. This would not add that much onto the overall system cost. Often people are dropping $3K on these machines already.

If you are dealing with a video production business, which is a very common thing, you need this all of the time.

Sure, but it's not going to be cheap!

Sure it is. 10GigE is not that expensive. You could get desktop motherboards with dual 10GigE in 2014: http://www.anandtech.com/show/8781/asrock-x99-ws-e-10g-motherboard-review-dual-10gbaset-for-prosumers

Err I mean to the Mac..

Oh well, if you have a Mac, nothing is going to be cheap.

                                    Thunderbolt to 10GBe is $500

Ehhh cost of admission to the 10GBe club. Really if you're after performance that'll be couch cushion change after you've got a sexy NAS and HDD's

It's dumb to me that no mac has 10GBe on board yet.

Just doesn't seem to be the Mac wheelhouse. They have very specific markets.

yeah anymore it's consumer-ish not Pro.. Sadly video codecs just work better on macs because developers focus their time there more.

LOL - like I said - NOT Cheap!

Then how much is a switch, assuming you need one? The chassis will be rather expensive as well for those drives.
