Firefox Freeze on Alert

Anyone using Firefox on Linux Mint? I seem to get some really dramatic browser freezes anytime that FF kicks off a desktop notification. I'm going to have to turn it off, it is so bad. I had this with FF on Windows as well, but I feel like it was less pronounced. FF seems more stable overall, but this one freezing thing is really annoying. It can last several seconds!
Has anyone seen this? I've seen it in VMs, on direct hardware, etc.

I've seen similar on Chrome, I rarely use FF.

Windows 7 64-Bit fully updated and Chromium on Lubuntu

I do not use alerts from any browser. That is nothing but an interruption. worse than a phone call IMO.

I like what it does, or tries to do. Just a little note in the corner of my screen saying that something happened. If I look away I don't even realize that it happened. but the freezing isn't tenable.
