If you are looking at SuperMicro plus a hardware RAID controller, it is hard to believe that Dell is not cheaper.

We already have the Supermicro server, just trying to build a solution around re-purposing the existing server for on-site backup storage.

For backup storage, why would you spend money on hardware RAID? Use Linux and MD RAID.

Just weighting our options, and my brain is kind of fried after the 15 some proposals I've worked on. Trying to account for every option.

If money is tight at all, a hardware RAID controller for the backup device will be hundreds of dollars without really adding value. Those CPUs will be idle and everything will be offloaded to the RAID controller. Might as well leverage the CPUs, get a faster system and save $600+.

So what? Install Xen or Hyper-V to SD or USB stick, then create Software RAID 10 for VM?

Sweet... I was wondering if the RAID card was worth it in the backup server - The card, probably not, though RAID is still worth it so you don't have to rebuild it completely if you loose a drive.

But generally RAID 6, not RAID 10, in a backup device.

If the idea is keeping the budget down, software RAID sounds like a great option. That is a large chunk of cash necessary to get a quality RAID controller.
