Apple Loses Massive Chip Patent Case
-
Apple has lost a patent court case against the University of Wisconsin for the use of a 1998 patent on chip power reduction. The same patent is used by Intel who previously settled with the university. The loss will hit Apple for over $800m USD before any fines for willfully having done so (rather than accidentally.)
Apple is still facing a new suit from the university for the same patent in two newer chips too new to have been included in the original.

WOW - that university should now be giving free tuition to all students for a few years!

You'd expect, but it's probably going to the Golden Parachute fund.

UofW is pretty cheap, I think, as it is.

That looks like a pretty significant loss. They must have been pretty sure that this one was coming for quite some time. Now they have to be thinking about how they are going to handle the rest of it since they apparently have two chips that were not covered in this case!
