Microsofts Hadoop on Azure Big Data as a Service Offering Built on Ubuntu Linux
-
ZDNet reports that Microsoft's own Azure cloud's Big data as a Service Hadoop product is built on Ubuntu Linux. There is little doubting now that Microsoft is seriously embracing the Linux ecosystem.

I don't think that it is incredibly shocking, but it is somewhat of a surprise. It makes sense, Hadoop plays really well on Ubuntu and Microsoft wants to delivery an excellent service for big data processing and if Ubuntu is the way to do that then that is what they are going to do. They are less concerned these days about "keeping it all in the family" as much as they want to deliver the right services that work well for their customers. They have some good strategy going on right now.

Interesting. I wonder why they chose Ubuntu? I assume that these are "encapsulated" services and not something where customers would ever see the Linux, just might know that it is being used somewhere.

I doubt that they will be making any "visible" Linux products for some time, at the least.
