I was looking at switches that were mainly Gb and had 4 SFP+ ports, as I only have 3 ESXi hosts with local storage.

For example, I like a new, fast desktop just like everyone else. But I really get excited about cost effective desktop purchasing and long term support and stuff.
I don't have a Raspberry Pi, even thought I love RISC and alternative architectures. No business use case for it, so I don't get excited about it.
Yeah, I drool when I see datacenters but still love consumer gadgets.

RE: Analysis of Locky ransomwareposted in IT Discussion
@scottalanmiller That is interesting, for sure. I think a ton of IT people are into gadgets and most technology in their non-professional lives as well. I sure as hell am.

Leo was/is definitely more gadgets and consumer hobbyists. But I still loved TSS and they did a reboot of it on his site. I don't have enough time to keep up with it but I think it is still going on.

We are using Dells. @art_of_shred or @Mike-Ralston would have to tell you which models, they have physical access to them.
Interested in the model numbers. I am pushing for some Extreme switches and have been planning an upgrade and expansion for about a year including the, "It is going to be about $25K-30K" remarks several times to my boss. Get it all ironed out and just under the 30K mark after some back and forths with the vendor and Extreme and then I get the, "Wow. That is a lot more than I thought." when submitting the proposal. Waiting to hear back from the owner next week. Might have to go back to the drawing board.

The next three nodes are on their way now! The first three nodes were the SATA tier. We have an SSD tier coming now as well.
Ahhhh... to have a budget for such things must be nice.

RE: Domain Administrator or (s)? Best practices?posted in IT Discussion
@LAH3385 Yeah, I am going to allow them very limited access to the domain. Probably won't give domain admin. Just allow him local admin under a secondary account to desktops/laptops. I am also going to have to figure out access to AD for things like creating users and password resets etc.

@LAH3385 I hope to add someone, more of a helpdesk, though and was wondering the same thing.

If you want one that actually works nicely and "does what it says on the tin" then check out these bad boys.

For cheaper you could whitebox a solution but then it'd be network only.
Edit: why not network it? I've seen you ask for local connections but no reason for it.
Needs to be DAS. NAS isn't nearly fast enough for the data. also Macbooks are Wifi only making it worse.
In my experience you'll have better performance from gigabit ethernet than you will with USB3. eSATA would be better than both, but not by much. Can't speak to thunderbolt.
GigE can easily be carried over USB3. USB3 is much faster... lower latency, higher throughput.
Much shorter distances though.

Of course you can also say to the sales person "how did you get to a private number?" and demand an explanation of how they got your number. You are never obligated to listen to a sales pitch. Simply don't take the calls. And as the IT department, considering blacklisting vendors that pull that crap. Problem solved.
I can trace the calls back through the phone system to find out how they got to me. Sometimes it is random number pressing through automated menus but mostly it is the operators, but after repeated scolding, it has been a long time since they have done that.
I have added repeat offenders as contacts with prefix Don't Answer. I almost never answer calls from external numbers. Unless I am waiting for a call back from support somewhere. Sometimes that bites me and I get pissed when someone on the other end asks me if I am the person in charge of VOIP or toner purchasing. Don't call here again! Click -

I was already using Evernote and have just stuck with it.
Same reason I don't look at new TVs, I don't want to buy one.
But what if you could get a new one for free?

RE: Analysis of Locky ransomwareposted in IT Discussion
@Dashrender I had the same problem. I told all operators that answer external calls to never give out my information or anyone's info for that matter. I have also had the random e-mail get to someone that is the same type of thing, please forward this to your IT person or please reply with their contact information. NEVER RESPOND

@brianlittlejohn Ah. I knew it was a "home" network thread but thought some people would have been blurring the lines with their gear.

RE: Home Network Firewall Optionsposted in IT Discussion
@brianlittlejohn Which one? I am using an Eaton 5P (1500va) 1 U for my wan link equipment. I have the NMS card that is rebooting about once a day. Upgraded the firmware of the card, per tech support and the next thing to try is powering off the UPS and removing the card, replacing it and powering it up.

RE: Home Network Firewall Optionsposted in IT Discussion
@JaredBusch I do understand that. I needed an AP and the regular version was out of stock in several places that I could get it from quickly enough.
I will also add that it isn't just the LR that I have seen reports/complaints of my issue. It was the other models, as well.

try dialing the power output back on the UAP.
Thanks, I will try that. I have seen others having similar problems going back to the previous generation of APs but I couldn't identify any one thing in particular.

RE: Home Network Firewall Optionsposted in IT Discussion
I have been running an ERX for a couple of weeks and it really is great for the money. I also have a UAP-AC-LR that I am having some issues with in terms of devices losing connectivity. Most of my stuff is hard-wired. My phone loses connectivity from what I can tell about once a day but my WiFi thermostat disconnects and won't reconnect, making it all but useless for 75% of the time. I saw an update was released as of 2-29 but that didn't fix the issue. I am going to hit up support to see what they recommend.

@nadnerB I have mainly had Asus boards. My previous build was a Gigabyte that lasted about 6 years and my current one I went with an Asrock.
