for them to be fired, even if they were discussing wages.

As long as they are not at work at the time, and didn't get paid lots of money to give up their rights, there should be no grounds for firing people over things that they are legally required to disclose in many situations.

I understood it that they both got hired the same day.

Yeah, at the same time, and discussed it before even starting.

Then I have a problem with him getting $8.25 and her getting $8, even though they agreed to it. They were both new hires, they both should have started at $8.25.

This is one of those situations where the person needs to advocate for themselves honestly.

And maybe this is just me going from Windows to Linux, I admittedly don't know anything about how harddrives work in Linux

The thing to know is that software raid is totally unreliable in windows and very reliable in linux

This reminds me of Jennifer Lawrence talking about getting paid grossly less than her peers. What did she say? "I don't blame them it's my fault for not negotiating more."

    • Securing Linux File Servers

Disclaimer: There may be some stupid questions here.

I'm going to be building a Linux file server for my company. We are currently paying around $750 per month to a company. This company basically scans our medical documentation for us and shreds the physical copies once per year. They also give us an external hard drive. This is probably the most grossly overpriced 'service' I have seen in my career so far. They list removing paper clips and staples as a service (as an example). I see no reason why I can't purchase a small server for medical records and use the backups we already create. We are only using 180 GB of space so far after 4 years. Once we get passed 200 GB the costs become even crazier.

In my experience, Linux file servers simply perform better than windows. I also know that Linux is inherently more secure. My question is: apart from fail2ban, SELinux, updates and permissions what is best practice in terms of securing this file server on the initial installation as well as over time? I dick around with Linux but I've never put one of my servers into a real production environment.

@scottalanmiller said he is going to do a writeup someday (soon?) on this process. (Replacing AD with Samba.)

I'll probably give it a go. We're down to less than 20 employees, so if it burns, it burns.

Is SAMBA4 better in a windows only environment or is it simply the best solution for hybrid environments?

In a Windows only environment, I don't know if it really makes sense. Assuming you have the license in place already, why not use the native platform? Doesn't mean a SAMBA DC doesn't make all kinds of sense when you don't have the licensing in place already.

Well, you need to maintain said licensing (ie refreshes etc). I'd rather move to SAMBA and use the licensing for other stuff or spend less if possible

This is going to be the longest hour ever waiting to drive over to get my server. uggghhh

LOL. We probably won't hear from you for days as you start playing with it.

I got back really late last night. Her dad wanted to see me to talk about the election. I did install XenServer but I didn't have the time to do anything else. This weekend is going to be fun though

Talking about politics with your future in-laws... that can be an interesting predicament.

He grew up with no money at all and lived a very basic life for a really long time. Learned everything he could about the stock market and then invested heavily. Made millions. Typically I don't like talking about politics or religion because you either disagree and things can get heated or you agree and it's a boring conversation. I'm lucky because he has such an incredible understanding of the economy and business that it's a great learning experience for me.

    • Video Conferencing Software

Right when I was hired an order for two Touch Smart TV's with E-boards was put in. They want to use them for video conferencing. What software do you guys recommend? They literally just want audio/video conferencing through PC's. I was thinking Skype but this isn't something I've really needed to research until today.
