6 months later the SSD drive dies in my main PC. I have to access email via a "testing" PC without an Office installation, so I login via the Office 365 website. What crap awaits me? I still can only see emails in the inbox, not my folders! I do the Google and I find the "unread emails" selection you can use in Favorites on the desktop app doesn't exist on the web/browser app. Basically my hard work of creating rules for folders has been undone by MS with Office 365. To get any work done while using this testing PC, I had to delete all rules so I can see emails in the inbox and I get to MANUALLY move them. This is NOT a step forward.

This is nothing like what my OWA looks like. All of my folders are identical whether on OWA or Outlook. Literally the same, I sometimes forget which I am in. And now with 2013, for the first time, my Outlook rules go to the server and apply to OWA, not just locally to the client like you would expect. Not sure what is breaking for you, but this isn't intrinsic to Office 365.

SAM, the folders are there, but if mail is in those folders, it didn't show up unless you clicked on the folders. To check my email online I had to click on each of the the 50 folders and subfolders to see if there were any new emails in them.

This sounds like a rant about Android. Android hands email horribly. What application are you using to read your emails on the Android? It's not part of the Office 365 suite, is it? Last I knew, there wasn't such a thing making this purely an Android email client issue. This works fine on other platforms like iOS.

My test PC using Windows 7 using Chrome or IE to access Office 365 via the Outlook link which opens the Outlook Web App. That is where I find out that my Android email app is not the problem, I had the same issue using the browser online.

    • Office 365 OneNote Rant

Let me say when I first tried OneNote, I was hooked. It was about the same time that IE9 allowed pinning and I was using that browser alot! I was still using Android as a RDP device to my PC and to read tech emails, and forums like SW and LinkedIn.

My wife wanted access to OneNote so we could share our notes easier which didn't work. An upgrade from Office 2007 to 2010 and setting up OneNote for the first time, she couldn't connect to OneNote online I believe from Skydrive. I tried everything that MS suggested short of reinstalling Windows 7.

I was still happy and started creating passwords for certain notebooks. I was really stoked until I met with a client and got online to my OneNote notebook that had a password and I was blocked completely from viewing. After that I moved back to keeping my data on my PC.

Office 365 and OneNote 2013 offer the use of passwords!! Again excited by the news, only to find out...you can't create on online. You must use the desktop app first. ARRRGGGGGG!!!

As the world gets more mobile and we expect and some of us demand cloudy products, it would be nice if they tied into desktop apps secondly. Yes, I understand we can't expect Word to be the exact same online as on a rich desktop, but what if you could use bold unless you had the desktop app first. Seem stupid to you? I feel the same about OneNote and the password thing.

We do it using Pertino. You'll need some sort of security or else you have AD completely exposed which is very bad.

      Thanks!

    • Office 365 Outlook Online Rant

I have been using MS Office products since v2000. I was always quick to move to the newest version, usually running my small business on the Beta versions and my favorite product was Outlook.

Since our business provides email hosting, it took me over a year to consider Office 365 and MS exchange hosted email services. However with an Android phone and tablet it seemed the right time to extend my cloudy + mobile horizons especially since clients were asking questions.

I don't know why there was a Lync app for Android but no MS apps. I used the stock email app on the Android devices.

I use folders in Outlook 2013 and rules. However on my Android devices it seemed the emails in the folders are "hidden" from view. In fact, to find if you have mail in a folder, you have to check every folder. NOT very user friendly.

6 months later the SSD drive dies in my main PC. I have to access email via a "testing" PC without an Office installation, so I login via the Office 365 website. What crap awaits me? To get any work done while using this testing PC, I had to delete all rules so I can see emails in the inbox and I get to MANUALLY move them. This is NOT a step forward.

Yes yes, I Google some more and found some "magic" words to enter into search every time to "find" the emails in my folders, but i would have to do that every time i went from folder to inbox. And i wasn't about to do that.

Office 365 should get 5 stars but only gets 3 for screwing the end users and for the posts I found that said I should have the desktop version installed or I should have used powershell.

No official spot for that. Maybe a reviews group would make sense? Rants would probably go best wherever they fit. General rant in the WC and technology rant in the IT section. Kind of a best judgement thing there. Having a group just for people to write up reviews wouldn't be a bad idea.

      • list item (this one sounds funny in my head) is self promotion in the water closet allowed?

We are considering a "self promotion" group. A place for vendors (or any sort as long as they are IT.... from server makers to local repair shops) to gratuitously post about themselves. A place where there are no limits and you can be as self promoting as you want and no one can complain 🙂

If you are talking about a post where someone is looking for service and you are like "Hey, i do that, use me", that's fine. A thread just to say "I'm a cool service provider, use me" would be frowned on. A bit of a grey area and why a pure self promotion area would make sense, I think. Does that sound right to you?

A bit question around this is.... how can we allow this and add the value that people wanting to promote things want while not devaluing the conversation for others. We aren't trying to block anyone getting their name out there, just want to keep the conversation quality high too.

Sounds good. I was looking for where to post when a product or service I use worked out great. Also somewhere to show off a new website for a client!

I have demoed the product a few times and even wrapped in our website! I think it's fantastic and will be looking to add it to our company's tool box in the next 6 months.

I was really sold on the ability to send the "end user needs to do nothing.exe" file. After trying to send the normal .exe, I send the other one and was able to connect. The end user couldn't follow directions.

I used to think people were just whiners about the fact that the wallpaper didn't follow from the desktop to the start screen, but I definitely notice the 'jarring nature' of it now that I'm using Windows 8.x daily. Does it bother me enough to complain, not really.

But the default apps that MS wants you to use, COME ON! I'm on the desktop why in the world would I want to use a full screen PDF viewer or picture viewing app? especially if the system has a desktop version installed (hint hint Windows photo viewer).

LOL...I just saw a client this week who needed a "tune up" on her W8.1 PC. I got there and she said look, and clicked on a video. The video W8 app page loaded and the spinning wheel started. After 30 seconds, I closed the window. I right clicked on the video icon and clicked open with Windows Media Player...and BAM the video started playing immediately!

The customer was like wow, the other way took 2-3 minutes to start and then would pause and like fast forward and was weird acting. I told her that I made sure all her videos would now open in WMP.

Except for the FB app (sort of) I don't know of any W8 App that does anything for me.

    • RE: What Does Your Company Do for SEO?

      @scottalanmiller said:

      The best SEO comes from:

      • Using open web standards correctly
      • Having good quality, real content.

      I would like to add:

      • list item Add content that your users would find interesting
      • list item Write for people, not search engines
      • list item Blogs are followed because of the tone of the author or how the content is delivered which is why blogging is personal even more so for a business website.
      • list item Oh and keywords are only useful if people are actually searching for them. And Google has made this harder for you to figure out. I believe part of this to push business to create...

      better content.

FYI copying content from MS or other vendors does not make great content for your website. Using a CD of descriptions and images for all your items your are selling is not good content. Good content is "crafted", which is why creating good content is not an easy chore.

SEO is only one part of marketing. You should have some social marketing and e-newsletter type of marketing set up as well. If you don't have someone in house to work on marketing, you need to outsource. Do your homework, there is no magic here, just hard work that you have to pay someone to do.

    • RE: Ways to Know You've Been Hacked

Article says: "No. 1 recommendation is to completely restore your system to a known good state before proceeding. In the early days, this meant formatting the computer and restoring all programs and data. Today, depending on your operating system, it might simply mean clicking on a Restore button."

I remember that in the XP & Vista era, system restore's would have instances of the malware or virus in them. So we stopped using system restore as a start point. Does anyone one else trust the system restore?
