Is there any difference in quality between Dell's versus HP's small micro computers?

Any difference in the Windows installations on these?

I run with both as well. The HPs tend to be cheaper than the Dells which is a plus. I have the Ryzen5 models for the HP elite desks and my only complaint with those are the fans kick on frequently and are a little noisy. The Dells you never hear the fan on.

@scottalanmiller my two orders got through and will be shipped 3 weeks ahead of time.

@krisleslie - Was that a Dell order or HP?

We ended up ordering refurbs and have already installed them.

I agree but again lots of data and lots of renaming to something that still makes sense to them. Plus you always get the "Well we didn't have a problem on the old system".

But you would simply respond with the old system worked because it was old, this new system doesn't work because it's new and the way forward. So we need to change the process a bit.

As for the renaming, it's a rather automatic setup. I'll grab it and post it so you can see it.

      Cool I appreciate it!!

Gotcha, yeah that isn't actually a resolution in my mind. One because there are always going to be issues down the road attempting to access Sharepoint with a file path of <255 characters and secondly you're going to end up with all sorts of performance issues from Sharepoint.

I think fixing the path lengths would make more sense, rather than editing the system registry on each client.

Also worth asking/mentioning if you can would reducing the length of these file paths break anything major? I have a powershell script that makes this trivial in the sense that it can remove numerous repeated characters and replace them with a single hyphen or space mark. (really anything you wanted)

Construction client - so they like to have folders setup "Complete Projects\JobName\Change Orders\VendorType\Some long file name.xlxs"

Part of the issue is that when the data was hosted on their server the shares were mapped so the paths were shorter. With OneDrive the full path shows up as "C:\users\username\Sharepoint CompanyName - Documents Directory...."

That's a long path by itself.

    • Windows File Explorer 260 Character Limit

I recently had a client move to Sharepoint and ran into a snag. Of course they have many many embedded folders and are running into the issue of the file path being too long. The client is accessing data via OneDrive on their desktops. I know Windows 10 added the LongPaths option where you can increase to 400 characters instead of 260. It is my understanding that not all applications support this increase. Is File Explorer one of those programs?

I have already enabled LongPaths in the registry as well as in Group Policy Win32 Enable Long Paths.

      Thanks

I talked to my rep today and he confirmed the CPU was the item holding everything up. I asked if there was a different CPU option that would speed things up. He said regardless it would be a minimum 10 days before it would ship. I cancelled and ordered a refurb.

    • Delays on servers from Dell

Has anyone ordered a server direct from Dell recently? I placed an order last week (11/21) and couldn't help but notice that the expected delivery date is January 15, 2020. I had ordered a T440 system with pretty standard specs. In the past my Dell orders used to ship about a week after ordering and I would receive the server about 3 days after shipping. Does this have anything to do with the Intel shortage or is that just the desktops?

I have 2 clients that are both currently on SBS2011 (Server 2008R2 and Exchange 2010). What is the preferred method to migrate to O365 Hosted Exchange? In the past I have always just exported PST files and the recreated email accounts online and then imported the PSTs. This method seems to work alright with the exception of cached autofill accounts that we usually just clear from Outlook. I was looking at the option of using Azure AD Sync and then moving the mailboxes but seems like more effort than what is needed. The file shares are being moved to Sharepoint/OneDrive and the server is going away. Anyways, what is your typical migration plan? The clients have about 15 accounts a piece.

      Don't even make the PST.

Just create a remote migration sever in O365 and suck the data up.
I just did it for 139 mailboxes.

The two clients are both on different networks with their own SBS servers. Can I use Azure AD connect to migrate both servers users to the same O365 account? We basically want to merge the two environments into one online account. There are not duplicate usernames on the two servers so I don't think this will be a problem but just curious if you've ever had to do something like that.

      Thanks

AzureAD has nothing to do with the migration of email. You are mixing things.

If you are wanting to switch to Azure AD and have disparate environments, then you need to just import the email as I mentioned. Then have everyone sign in to O365 and update their passwords, then disjoin the local computers form AD and rejoin AzureAD.

I would completely skip the disaster of merging two unrelated, on-premises, AD forests.

So which tool or method do you use to migrate the mailbox? Powershell? Everything I have seen/read shows that you first create your users with the connect tool and then move the mailboxes.

@Pete-S said in Can remote desktop Win10 be remotely activated somehow?:

Thanks guys. I tried accessing remote registry, remote powershell and ssh but without success. I have to find out how they do their remote administration and get them to enable rdp for me. It was worth a shot though.

Try MMC and see if you can add Services for their computer. If you can add that successfully then you can enable Remote Registry and then from there enable rdp. Make sure you restart the rdp service after making the registry change.

Another method would be if you have PDQ deploy installed on another system at the location, you can try to push a ScreenConnect or similar install to the system.

@Pete-S said in Envelopes in Brother Printers:

      It's very common. I'd say it's a standard feature.

You want thick materials to pass as straight through as possible. Laws of physics are at play, not anything else. Same thing printing on other types of heavy stock or things that you do not want to bend.

Larger printers can have larger diameter rolls inside and can handle a little thicker stock without sending it straight through.

I guess I get that with bending and going through the rollers it's going to be too thick for a smooth transition. I just know the conversation is going to start off with "Well my last printer didn't need to do that".

As long as I can back up that most modern printers need to do this there's not much more to argue about it.

@wrx7m - Yeah it looks like most of the Brother printers advertise this as how to print envelopes. I also suggested to the client to see if they can change the paper type or size via the settings menu on the printer for the manual tray.

Seems like such a dumb design. I can’t imagine anyone thinking it is normal to have to open up the back and then unlatch the fuser tabs to print an envelope.

    • Envelopes in Brother Printers

Is it common that you have to open the back cover on a Brother printer in order to send envelopes through? Is this common on most laser printers? The below video shows and example of what I am talking about. A client called asking me why the envelopes come out all crinkled when they print. I sent them this video. I kind of feel like that is a pain but if that is common in all or most laser printers what can you do right?

We got a quote for $800 / mo. for 3,000 FAXes / mo. -- approx 9,000 pages / mo. A few POTS lines and an Intermec Multitech FAX server paid for that rather quickly.
Sorry folks, but there are industries that will FAX no matter the opinion of others.

Not a horrible price, but supposedly way, way higher than the voip.ms price. Which is like $200-$270 supposedly.

There's a huge difference here though Scott - with the VOIP.ms solution, YOU have to provide the ATA, the fax modem, the local storage, etc.

With those online solutions, you just have, heck - your phone.

I've played around with using a voice line from VOIP.MS for sending faxes as they advertise support for t38. It is very hit or miss though whether faxes successfully send or not. I sometimes get the feeling that it depends on who the receiving provider is. If I send to a Comcast phone line it seems to typically go through. If I send to an AT&T line it seems to error out near the end of the fax.

VOIP.MS recently started advertising FoIP but it still requires having a virtualfax number as well as a voiceline.
