    • RE: Zentyal 5.0 release in November

Due to the issues found recently in the OpenChange (that offers native synchronization with MS Outlook clients via MAPI protocol), this functionality has been dropped until the issues have been fixed and the module has been stabilized. For the time being, Zentyal can be deployed as a IMAP-POP3 mail server.

This was really the only appealing feature and now it's gone.

@guyinpv - All the same functionality can be achieved by setting up a Samba AD server. Zentyal just provides a nice web interface to configure everything. However, if you look at the forum posting over the last year the product has been loaded with bugs.

If Zentyal is dead, I'm screwed. They are like the only competitor for Windows Server. Maybe. I've barely got my Zentyal fully functional, I hope nothing is dying!

Only meant it's dead because there is very little activity on their site. Zentyal employees don't seem to be involved in the forums anymore. Most of the community jumped ship about a year and half ago because Zentyal removed key features from the developer version and basically put all their focus on the paid versions. At that point everyone seemed to have gone to Nethserver.org

I know there was a recent post about Zentyal and I made the comment that it appears to be a dead project. I just saw this on another forum post. Possibly making a comeback???

I wonder if this means adwcleaner cannot be used for business use unless you purchase Malwarebytes endpoint.

      Appears to be baked in.

Is that for the commercial product or the opensource? Or is it one in the same? I was looking more at the opensource for now.

I don't know much about Bacula but when I was researching a couple months ago I came across Bareos which is a fork of Bacula. Not sure if that is the new direction for the software.

Does Zimbra require an additional plugin to work with ActiveSync or is it already baked in the software? I have seem posts about Z-Push but wasn't sure if that is something that has to be installed afterwards.

@DustinB3403 - You could always image the systems instead of migrating. But I guess that depends on if you can allow for down time.

@scottalanmiller So should I destroy this SR and try to create it as EXT3? and if I do can I migrate a thick provision vm over to a thin provisioned host?

Migration should be fine, but I've not done it. Should you be ext3? That's up to you 🙂

My question is converting the storage to thin going to break my VM's if I import them from a Thick provisioned system...

If you don't have the answer, just say so.

Don't quote me on this but I believe your VM's would be fine. Thin provisioning is just the way the virtual disk is created and expands as the internal data grows. If you migrate a VM that was created with thick provisioning, it would just stay in that state of using all the disk space you assigned to it.

Assuming you're not using the NC sync client what's the work flow for editing a Word document using Word?

      Let me guess:
      Log into NC
      Local file
      download file to local computer
      open downloaded file in word
      edit file
      save document
      close word
      upload updated file to NC.

Assuming this is the work flow, I'll be amazed if users don't revolt!

      Using OneDrive the flow is:
      Open word
      find file in OD
      Edit file
      save to OD
      close word

      LibreOffice Online???

For all of you who tout the lanless concept, what are you using to accomplish this? So far, I see a lot of hybrid suggestions- Nextcloud/ODfB plus a file server.

We use NextCloud only now, transitioned off of ODfB. Working on eliminating SharePoint, it is just a storage vestige now, not part of the current plan. Mostly web interface only, sync when needed. No LAN.

From a security point of view, do you guys leave this open to the internet over https? Or do you keep the firewalls closed and use something like ZeroTier on everything?

    • RE: Install Zentyal 4.2 on Scale HC3

As someone who has come off of a couple Windows SBS (2003, 2008) servers, it seemed like a pretty nice alternative. I think that is what they were going for when they developed the product. However, the Exchange/Openchange portion always seemed to be a little on the buggy side. With development stalled I don't think I would touch it.

@JaredBusch I see, so you are using a combination of file server for shared data and Nextcloud for user data.

Trying to standardize most systems on SSD makes this challenging. Or am I going at this the wrong way and you would avoid using the sync application and just use WebDAV to map a network drive?

    • RE: Nextcloud/Owncloud best use cases

I guess the area I am questioning a little is if you are using Nextcloud/Owncloud as a file server for shared company data, then wouldn't you need all systems to have large hard drives to sync all shared data to their desktop/laptop?

@JaredBusch Thanks for the response. Do you typically set it manually or are you using a GPO?

Just curious, are you also using these products to store shared data for everyone in the office to access or mostly for desktop and documents (user personal files)?

    • RE: Install Zentyal 4.2 on Scale HC3

I check out the Zentyal forums every so often to see what's new and the development has gone down dramatically. They seemed to have lost a lot of their community due to moving their focus more onto their paid product.

A lot of their community jumped ship to nethserver.org and clearos.org. Both currently have Samba AD in beta.

    • Nextcloud/Owncloud best use cases

So I kind of wanted to expand on the post Offline files nightmare but the discussion started to veer off to other discussions.

I know that some have adopted Nextcloud, Owncloud, OneDrive for Business, Google Drive, etc. as replacements for smb file servers. What I am curious about is how everyone configures these solutions in their environment.

Do you still use folder redirection but point it to the Nextcloud folder? Or do you tell users it's on them not to save data to their desktop and documents?

Do you map network drives using WebDAV for internal users?

Do you create shares from an admin or main share account and then have all users sync the data to their local machine?
