It can be good, but a lot of these closed units can't cope with an extreme situation.
Have you run an CPU stress testing on this desktop and see if it croaks?

nope.. I can remote in and run it from work, but wont be able to reboot once it croaks..lol

If the cooler isn't working, your friend should want to replace the CPU and cooler. Not just the cooler.
So get whatever CPU matches the socket and a cooler for it.
Classic fans, while they make noise still work darn well.

If I gotta do that, might just upgrade it to a 2700x :loudly_crying_face:

ouch..I will be paying for the repair since its my cousin and i built it. he still in high school. So water cooling is actually not as good as old school cooling?

It would give you an indication if the heatsink is actually working as well as you can point it to other parts in the system and get a general idea how the entire system is being cooled.

Just ordered one. Should have it Saturday. Also will see how Corsiar responds to my ticket.

What kind of cooler do you guys recommend if I gotta buy a new one? The one I got should be under warranty.

I could.. Prefer not to, but can.. its only $16 on amazon

Directly on the CPU cooler there are 2 fans. Did you check that?

yea, the ones on the radiator are spinning. I am emailing corsair support as well to see what they say.

Dumb question but can your buddy see if the fans are spinning on this unit at all?

Yea it is. I checked. Not dumb at all.. I have 2 fans in front and one in rear if i remember right. and if i remember right, blowing front to back. and then the 2 on the rad.. all are spinning last i looked.

Thats kinda my thought.. Possible water cooler not running? And only the metal is acting like a heat sink?

I'm not sure how these water/liquid cooled units work, but if possible, you may want to check and make sure it's got water.

IDK either, all I know its an AIO enclosed system.

@Obsolesce said in Gaming Rig Issues:

      Oh I see.
It's hard to know what the exact issue is, whether it's thermal or power related. Intel's don't shut down until they get REALLY hot, and I didn't see evidence of that yet.
Is there a setting in the BIOS to control that? I don't think it does it until over 100 Celsius by default, though I'm not sure of the exact temperature.

Ill try look again at the bios. But all i saw was monitor and ignore for CPU temps.

I had him leave it on so I can remote in and current CPU Idle temp is 43c, with a max of 70c. Machine was not in use during this time. Updates or other background things may have happened.

Thanks for all the replies. >Just got to work and here are the replies.. Sorry, coffee isn't full kicked in yet, as its only 730 am

@dafyre said in Gaming Rig Issues:

You might consider adding a bigger CPU fan or additional case fans to exhaust the heat.

I have a Corsair H100iv2 water cooler on the CPU. Wondering if thats flakey. Not sure how long they last. I just reaplied new thermal paste, and I think this reading is slightly lower.. I can't remeber what it was before

@coliver said in Gaming Rig Issues:

On a semi related topic have you considered not over clocking? Modem processors are generally powerful enough to not be the limiting factor with games.

Yes, I have it back to normal now. He said it is better when over clocked. But If I can get the RAM to run at 3200, then maybe that might help to ??

@dafyre said in Gaming Rig Issues:

I will also echo @Obsolesce's mention of checking the power supply. If you have to replace it, it might be worth stepping up to a larger one.

How big would you recommend. Its a 850w now.

@Dashrender said in Gaming Rig Issues:

I tend to agree with either thermal or Power Supply as being the issue.

I was thinking thermal until PSU came up.. Could very well be that to.. When I ran everything in PC Part Picker, my PSU was big enough. I Will run it thru again.

@DustinB3403 said in Gaming Rig Issues:

I'd pull the CPU heatsink, remove the thermal paste and apply a fresh dab to the CPU.
If it's crusted on at this point the system was overheating for too long and it needs to be reapplied.

Yea, that was my first thought since it was the default compound from corsair.

@DustinB3403 said in Gaming Rig Issues:

So there are likely only 2 other items to test, either the CPU is damaged from overheating or the GPU is defective and causing the crashing when under heavy load.
Install a spare CPU and see if the issue persists. And then try installing a spare GPU and see if the issue persists.
It's one of those two items.

I don't have spare parts.. Any parts I would have to buy.. Funny you mention GPU, as I forgot to mention. When gaming, should it be using 100% gpu resources when playing rainbow six / fortnite (I know depends on what settings he is using)? I dont remember what he had everything set to. I think fortnite he dropped to low cuz even when not over clocked it was poor performance. I am not liking the CPU issue.. I hope thats not what's wrong.. 😞

I will also check orientation of all fans.. Where should all of them face? Air flow front to back, or back to front?

Do any of you have Ryzen systems? How have they been? This was build for video editing, but now he games on it..

@Obsolesce I never saw any logs in BIOS. Looking at eventvwr now, only see that improper shutdown/etc. It seems to happen when he is gaming it seems..

My brain is fried thinking about it, and I could be missing things in Event Viewer.

OK, so this might be a little long and confusing. Please feel free to ask me anything or clarify anything. This is for my cousins gaming machine I built for him, and I am not a gamer, nor do I build machines on a weekly basis. So I am at a loss, and this is out of my area of expertise.

OK, so I built the machine in June 2017. I over clocked it using the BIOS preset gamer over clock setting. It worked fine for about a year, then all of a sudden the computer started shutting down while he was playing games. So I took off the over clock and loaded optimal preset. I reapplied new compound to it this weekend, and reset the over clock back to what it was before and it ran fine for one day, then starts to shut down again, so load optimal.

While OC, during idle the max value was 69c. During load 80-90c. I am not sure what temps where when I first build it.

Back to optimal, defualt bios config, at idle, max is 66c, avg 50-55. Ill try get more temps tomorrow after he plays again, but if i remeber right was 75-80

I am using HWMonitor. Not sure if there is something better to use than can log the temps

So I am wondering is there a hardware issue? Possible water cooler went out (I dont have the usb connected yet, but will once the cable comes in)?

One other issue I had with it was the RAM I got was not on the QVL, and was hoping it would eventually be supported and run at the 3200mhz. Right now on latest bios, its still at 2133. I purchased new RAM to try get something more compatible (thinking I finally got the cooling under control).

Again, sorry, I am a noob at gaming rigs, and havent actually built systems as a living for over 10 years, so sorry if I sound dumb, or confused.
