You covered what I would of, and more! Can't fault you for that.

RE: And that's how you get zombies...
The Siafu documentary was one of the coolest bug videos I have seen. I am glad we have normal ants over here in the states. Ants that can swarm and devour dying cows and passed out humans (allegedly) has my respect.
@deniskelley That sounds incredible I am going to look that up.
I will have to watch the original video posted off company time.

RE: Linux Mint an Ideal Replacement to XP?
Gotcha.
I laughed a bit as your response said "like failing to lick your front door". Threw me off a bit. I see the differences though and how that could confuse others in conversation using them inversely.
Thanks for the clarification!

No "security by obscurity" in Linux. None at all.
Well it's a good thing he didn't listen to me! I mainly meant a low % of viruses written for such a small user base.
From what I understood from the article originally posted it doesn't recommend any anti-virus besides ClamAV.

wait, when did google buy Waze?
Middle of last year, and in the $1.1B range. Some of the features have been slowly migrated to Google Maps. A bit like Google's acquisition of Zagat ($125M in 2011).
OP story is still low on the radar. Bit more info and GPL tie-in—
I assumed Google Maps was slowly migrating some of Waze's functionality as it seems to have recently given me projected travel times based off traffic. Imagined that information is being pooled from the Waze users, but that's just my tinfoil hat speaking.
I think it's a positive acquisition and glad they haven't killed off the app altogether.

Not to echo to closely to everyone but I would also just request an RMA.
If you have that much IT resources into a brand new laptop it sounds like a money sink. A sign of things to come? Time is money friend!

RE: Linux Mint an Ideal Replacement to XP?
Well I just had my doomsday meeting with my boss (VP of Finance) and unveiled my weeks of research into different AV programs, and ways to ensure we are as close to bulletproof as possible as we approach April 8th. I inherited quite the outdated undocumented network (long story), anyway.
I tried bringing up Linux as an alternative to XP probably six times and he kept cutting me off, that was like a cuss word to him. This guy has micro managed and scrutinized $7.50 cord purchases from Amazon, but even he doesn't want to move to Linux. I finally got to get out the perks of Linux's security through obscurity and that really there is no AV cost as well for Linux. To my surprise he skipped and didn't engage or entertain that prospective savings.
Looks like I might just get a new fleet of PCs yet.. man I might just start dropping the L word when I need things that require funding.
I am still going to familiarize myself with the distro as you never know, the CEO might veto and I genuinely think it's a great alternative. Sorry I couldn't be the guinea pig.

RE: The Fallacy of Bonuses
I am new to my company but have saved them upwards of 5,000+ dollars by switching ISPs and fighting for past credits.
I got a ten dollar gas card for Christmas and was pretty well guilted into putting $5 in for my boss's. Net bonus: $5.
My first job I at least got $150 as a lowly IT Assistant.
Edit: Great write up I enjoyed the article, I see why WSJ referenced it.

RE: The worst. job. EVER.
I would probably say my current job, if we are talking IT jobs. To be fair I have only had two. I am "new" around 6 months but getting approval to buy minuscule things such as mice/keyboards/cords for users that obviously need them annoys me.
The list goes on of course, but the crux of this job was starting as the first IT guy (never had any in their 40 year operation) and inheriting individual networks/ISPs/etc completely undocumented at 37 locations across the US. I have managed to wrangle a lot of that in, but that gives you an idea to their mindset. Technology is the last thing they think about even in 2014.

RE: How did you get started in IT?
I played a ton of PC Games since I was a kid and I learned to install and troubleshoot things such as mods for half-life and build website for clans. Then I went to college for "Computers" because if I didn't like what I learned at least it would be valuable and relate for years to come.

RE: Linux Mint an Ideal Replacement to XP?
I am actually going to seriously consider this as a replacement for XP. It might challenge me to break out of my mold, but my company loves free and I see an opportunity to learn a lot.
I'll let you know what happens!

RE: Google Division Waze is Hit with $150m USD Lawsuit
I use Waze almost daily when I get close to downtown, it has saved me probably hours waiting in traffic and saved me a few times from a cop clocking people on the side road I take when I-35 is jammed.
I will admit find it tedious to enable/disable as to save battery life, privacy, etc. I just use it when I need information. Otherwise it's Google Maps.
