    • pfSense vs OPNSense - Fanboy fued or real differences?

I'm looking to move to pfSense or OPNSense and am dumping Sophos UTM free. I pulled down both ISOs and am ready to 'lab' them at home.

I've looked on the net for comparisons. A lot of them look like fanboy fueds.

Advise, suggestions, additional layers / products / apps that I should bring into the setup for a better rounded protection suite?

I'm hoping to fit a reread of the Stormlight Archive in over Christmas along with Sanderson's Skyward (going to have to fight for time with that one with my 14 year old).

I just started book 2. Book 4 is due out this coming year along with the last Wax and Wayne near in time.

Yeah, I'm pretty excited about what he posted yesterday. Knowing that Stormlight Archive is only 4 of 10 kind of put things into perspective. Sanderson probably has a large group of people hoping for his continued health and well being.

Sanderson's Stormlight Archive, I'll have to check it out.

I read the Mistborn series before I started this. I had a bit of a stutter getting into this after Wax and Wayne. I started getting into it about half way through the 1st book.
I wish he would extend Wax and Wayne further -- beyond 4 total books. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I'm halfway through the new book... I'd say neither of these live up to the memory I have of the original Zahn triology. They are good, but definitely not as good. As a matter of point - I started reading Alliances 4 weeks ago, and haven't gone back to it.

If you were Zahn, imagine how hard it would be to really put the effort into doing what he did before. They basically burned him like crazy, and they made it that taking the universe seriously has no future. Now its stewards don't respect it. So there is neither a culture of quality, nor the personal benefits of doing a good job. I can only imagine that for Zahn last time was passion, and this time is pure dollar signs. Which really, is how everything Disney is. That's why you choose the Disney life, yeah it makes a lot of money, but there is no soul in it.

Disney has a committee meeting. They have the Thrawn Trilogy in hand. Committee decides to purchase the franchise. Decides that drivel is the way to go forward. Smashes franchise to pieces.

I'm 80% through the 1st book of the Stormlight Archive -- The Way of Kings. Good read but I have to admit that the Mistborn series is more enjoyable to me.
I don't know if I'll move to the Kevin J. Anderson series -- The Saga of Seven Suns or the Harry Bosch series which I've heard many good things about.

@tonyshowoff ... "You're welcome" they just say "Yeah" or "Uh-Huh". One weirder thing I noticed is a strange number of people, but by no means even a majority, but a small enough minority to where it stands out to me, when they say Good bye on the phone, and only the phone, they'll say "mmmm bye"...

We buy paper by the pallet. Thus the need for controlling printing abuse.

Do you try and get so granular with the controls that you limit who can print in color or in black and white only? Or do you simply have a control in place (individual user pins) so you can generate reports and see who is printing at whatever quantities?

No. Just a reports. Costs are mostly known. If things get out of whack, we check the reports and see if there's a need for a change in behavior. Nothing draconian, just keeping things copacetic.

@Dashrender Ok but why is there authentication on printing? Is there a problem with someone printing when they should not be? Just looking for details as I've never done this before.

I had to enable this years ago. Printing was out of control. User accountability was cited. We used AD and tied the printers into the login. Each user had individual printers mapped. I realize that this is nowhere near efficient, but it was pushed this way by the powers that be. No biggie once it was done. We don't have huge numbers of new users or user changes that it's a pain.

Seems odd that you would control it via a password on the printer tab. Can't you just control it from the print queue on the server? or is the printer doing LDAP/AD auth and the users are printing direct?

We have AD tie-in for each printer capable of doing it. Most of what we have supports it. The users pull in once we let it cook.

So you have to manually set something in the print driver to get the creds to pass to the printer to then be auth'ed by AD? Sucks that the driver does just pass along the current logged in Windows user.

      Yes. C`est la vie

EDIT: The users have the printers mapped for each workstation ~ 80 users total who can print. I also set the printer port as an IP address. I h * a * t * e the wsd mapping. Nothing but trouble

what is your practice/procedure if you need to shutdown the VM host due to power outages? The power failed to transition to generator and almost drained my Server UPS. When i reach the data center i have 3 minutes to shutdown the VM host. My backup UPS died already so I need to move the KVM to primary UPS. Luckily the Generator kicks in before the 1 minute mark.

Wow. Depends on your brand of UPS, level of EXSi, agent availability for UPS interactivity. I really don't have any advise except to say that you need to determine what you have to know what you can do. Our office uses HP's and they're quite old <ducks head> /serious embarrassment never ends. I have the Windows agent installed in each VM set to power down with 15 minutes of power left. We have APC's.

We have 21 guests on 2 ESXi servers. I login to the app for each server, hit each VM console, login & shutdown. Takes the better part of 10-15 minutes for each server.

Restart the server. Wait 5-10 minutes. Login to the management app.

I do this every 3-4 months. It seems to keep things even.

Trying to convince either of two young men that unplugging and plugging in an ATM is a good thing when needed.

I have to wait for the store manager to call me to power cycle the device.

Of course, they called support for the ATM before they called us. I didn't know that while i'm watching them on the cameras that we need a special laptop to test the internet strength.

      Happy Thanksgiving folks.

Western Pa - Wintery mix, ice everywhere, partially melted, covered in snow, partially melted. It looks like we missed the worst. Trees are down everywhere just east of here. Further east and north looks much worse.
We have two sites out of 25 down. The utilities and providers have their hands full.
I hope the rest of you fair better.

      It was acutally pretty good
