    • RE: Desktop UPS - do you have a favorite?

If you go APC, be sure to install the biz version of Power Chute for monitoring the little ones. You need to USB them to the PC, but the biz power chute does more for alerting, etc. I kinda feel like there has to be a better brand, though... companies I've worked for have tended to default to APC because they are easy to find, but Easton and Tripp Lite seem to have more features from the little I have investigated.

Though, do you believe that they can never be trusted again?

Without a doubt, I could never trust them again. There are accidents, there are mistakes and there is this. I cannot fathom the rationale of anyone willing to do business with them after this. This isn't a bad business move, this was completely criminal. It would be liking hiring an employee that you just caught breaking into your house to rob you.

But when I say shit like this, everyone assumes I'm off the effing deep end crazy / paranoid / whatever. Lenovo now occupies the same "deserves to be kicked down a bunch of stairs" space where I put politicians...

What is your commission for selling these?

Doesn't look to be a referral code on that url.

True, but starting off with "I sold 5 of these so far" says there is some compensation involved for the OP.

HitchBOT: Hitchhiking Robot That Toured Canada and Europe Destroyed in Philadelphia

The robot began its U.S. adventure in Massachusetts on July 17, and was documented in New York City and Boston. A photo of what is said to be the destroyed robot was posted to Twitter on Saturday.

More than 3,000 miles across Canada, many kilometers across several European nations and only 300 miles in the US before the robot was destroyed.

This is why other countries hate us. "Monkey smash foreign robot!!!!"

I hate that phones are making people less literate.

At least spelling is greatly improved and eubonic and other creative spellings are becoming less main stream

All that progress has been trumped by the fact that you can teach your phone to use incorrect spellings for auto correct. Most people wouldn't know a spelling error if you slapped them with it.

When is the last time that you heard someone say "Hey wait, Cisco gear is low up front value, bad ROI, bad resell value, overly expensive to maintain.... maybe we should get something better for cheaper!" Almost never, right? So, until that changes, this works really well for Cisco.

This is exactly how I explain Cisco. I'm glad my bosses agree...

We've got one of those users who likes to call 3-4 times a day saying the internet is slow.

Doesn't everyone have one of these users 🙂

That and callers who say "Is there a problem with the network because my computer is really slow today". There is never a "problem with the network" but this seems to be thing everyone mentions. It's not helped when people have a problem with a 3rd party system and the vendor says to them "can you check with the IT department and see if the network is ok". Or even "can you get the IT department to check the cables". The cables? WTF! Sort your crappy software before complaining about cables!

I have a vendor that does this all the time... "It must be something with the network." The last time they said we were getting odd database corruptions... turned out to be an error in the software that wasn't writing to the database correctly. The time before that they had some bizarre timeout issues on their client that was fixed with a software patch. Probably the network though.

My users ask "are you doing something to the server? because ______ doesn't work"...
Ok, 1) which server? there are like a dozen... and 2) i'm tired of telling you that your specific error comes from the poor configuration at the customer's site, I can't fix it.
