The "IT Director" at a small cable company I worked for in Florida told me he was trying to "move away" from virtualization. He was complaining because they were "getting slow."

I bet he failed to show any ROI on that move!

Ha he's a disaster. This was the only business in the world with guaranteed income and they still screwed it up. They had a contract with about 6 small HOA's in the area. They were the only cable company allowed to provide cable, internet, and phone (unless it was something like dish). They bragged about their FTTH setup, except they had horribly antiquated equipment that would break if you looked at it sideways.

They were upgrading their Minerva on demand system. Instead of migrating all of the data, they (he) just wiped it clean and installed the new system. So at 2:00 in the afternoon the VOD system went down, all of the movies were gone, and if you were in the middle of a movie too bad. So now the VOD content has to be downloaded again from their providers, BUT all of the old content that won't be released again was gone. So all of the Game of Thrones episodes that were released and weren't being released again were gone.....

They also literally ran their company off of an Access "database" that was designed by some lady who must have thought Access was some fancy spreadsheet application. The database only met the first normal form and that's because it's pretty much impossible to not meet it with a relational database. All of the notes for each address (they kept all of the information on houses as well since they did the installs and had some strange way of doing it) were kept in one memo field on each record. They printed out the actual form in access as work orders and kept paper copies. So when that giant memo clob was corrupted (which happened a good bit for many records) the only data we had was a printed snapshot of that memo field.

^^^ None of this is any surprise after you said "Florida". Down there, a stack of DVD backups in the microwave counted as "secure data disposal, in alignment with our contractual obligations and state laws". Not even joking. Didn't even have a dedicated "data disposal" microwave... just the one in the break room.

Really been a Ween kick lately. Such great songwriters, and ultimately silly to boot. This album is one of my faves.

When a refurb is done by the original manufacturer, I am more likely to buy it (assuming it includes a dead solid DOA warranty - return with no questions for refund, not an exchange).

The Kilt isn't the issue, the contest rules are say vague that this poor guy is going to end up eating the worlds hottest pepper.

And sadly, it won't be his mouth that burns.... yes, that too, but you wouldn't believe the capsaicin bomb that hits your stomach when you eat really hot, fresh peppers. Put them in a sauce or stew and it burns your mouth more. By itself, it burns the mouth a bit, but then it feels like construction going on in your GI tract after a half hour. He might just start tripping off it. Either way, I expect to see footage of the event.

This one is pretty funny, not aware of the hot spare. Over five years on SW and never saw a hot spare come up before. 🙂

That guy was convinced he had a million $ idea... but the existence of hot spares burst that delusion bubble.

Which is worse? Washing your hands in a restroom sink where you just heard someone have a 15-20 sneeze sneezing fit or skipping the restroom sink for the handi wipes in your own desk?

RojoLoco - are you willing to pay all of the websites you visit so they don't have to use ads to make the money needed to have those websites?

That right there is the rub. I don't mind static none blocking/interfering ads. But the advertisers know that those ads are skipped over 99.99% of the time or more.

The big 4 network stations (ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox) are all ad based stations. Of course now days the cable and satellite companies pay them too, but the majority of their money comes from advertisers. And it's a medium where it works well enough.

So I don't have an issue with their being ads on the page. But when an ad free page takes .7 seconds to download and an ad riddled page takes 45+ seconds even on 50+ Mbit/s internet connections, we have a problem.

"All those sites I visit" that aren't already subscription based (netflix, et al.) can get their scrilla from everyone else. I refuse to participate in the ad-based dumbing down of the planet. I never visit those TV sites you mentioned (fox, abc, etc), so I feel no guilt. Why should I feel bad if an industry I would see burned alive doesn't get 0.0000472% of their "due" revenue because I'm smarter than their ads?

FK YOUR ADS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FK THEM RIGHT IN THE A$$!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
