Just remember that if you buy some wacky tough superman rated cable you're going to have a bad time putting ends on it. Get pre-made lengths.
You should be ripping everything to a good format instead of mp3.... FLAC and AAC give similar file sizes and far better audio quality.
"What's that? Dev testing server is slow? Oh, there is a bad drive, I'll replace it..... oh, the rebuild will take until tomorrow, that was a RAID 5 array. Any critical data on there? Better move it ASAP, just in case...."
Plus side - once the databases are safely moved, I get to blow away the RAID 5 and make a RAID 10 And I'm sincerely holding back the "I told you so" until this data gets re-staged and all is well.
I'd love to see the actual wording in their Ts and Cs about what constitutes a "lifetime"....
"Lifetime storage for x dollars.... until we go tits up in the night and disappear, cutting you off from your data forever!!!"
@dafyre I'll see you there, I'm on that panel as well. The restaurant looks good, nice menu (that's always my main concern).
Take the laptop out and trade it for $20 worth of crack, then go buy a Dell or something. Win/win.
@mdecamp if everyone is going to draw connections to politicians, I retract my vote and I retract any involvement with helping you select a mascot, as I truly despise all politicians and politics in general. I'm a man of principle, and I won't be caught dead choosing which pseudo-politico mascot I prefer.
(this post made in jest, but I'm absolutely serious in my hatred for all things political)

Hi! I'm Danny. I am an IT generalist looking to up my game and add my 2c where I can. 33 and recently married and I have almost zero experience with Linux based distros and tons with Microsoft.
Browsing this site I've already ingested a ton Of new Knowledge. I love it and hope I can give back
Welcome to the tiniest minority here! (windows admins) The linux gang will be along shortly to ridicule us!
If you don't need 2 IP addresses, team those bad boys and increase throughput.
@MattSpeller I was just thinking that the 4 or 5 of us should have a tiny meetup group where we get on skype, drink our favorite brown liquor, and bash linux....
Or... when you're someone at a college with purchasing power and you think it's a great idea to buy internet enabled vending machines even though you're far too incompetent to understand, investigate, or mitigate the potential risks, and somehow it all goes badly....
I'd call that attack "well deserved". Now they should hire someone to buy vending machines who's not an imbecile.
@coliver that's the extent of my linux knowledge, but at least it's a punchline
Lots of user training for the entire staff. The only way to prevent these infections is to keep Janet in accounting from clicking every damn thing she sees. Training and better backups... which they may actually have to pony up some $$$ to do properly.
Yay! I get to wait around (during my lunch time) while an AT&T tech fumbles with our new fiber circuit. When I told him about what the other tech did last week, he was very confused.... way to go, AT&T!!! Keepin' it mediocre for decades!!!
If someone offered me a sandwich to off the tech, I would be disposing of a body later.
@stess said in Where do you buy home server?:
Allow me to rephrase my initial question then... For Home Server (with VMs) do you need Server grade Xeon, Rack, ECC memory, redundancy PSU?
Only if you need the type of redundancy / resiliency that a production system would need. I'm fairly sure that the latest generation of Intel NUCs have CPUs that will do virtualization. ECC memory, double PSUs, rackmounting, etc, are all things you need for business systems. If you aren't charging people to host stuff, no need for that at home. Not to mention fan noise, power consumption, etc will be next to zero with a NUC or similar device.
I just got the audio book of Hitchhiker's Guide.... read by Stephen Fry. Trying to make time to sit and read an analog book is next to impossible, so I'll read while in the car.
Isopropyl alcohol all over? Put it in a big bucket of coffee beans?
