Use it as an opportunity to improve your Spanish!

What platforms/operating systems are you needing to maintain? Server/Client mix? I haven't had to deal with remote offices AND a language barrier, but I used to do support for 9 remote offices. We used VNC over a VPN and it worked well. We also did real-time communication over over an Openfire/Spark setup and that kept phone calls to a minimum.

What is the pinch point of this situation that is giving you most grief? Just the language barrier?

      All Windows 7 Pro, spanish.

      And a single server 2012 R2 (physical)

I would think VNC would fit the bill as long as you secure everything properly.

Maybe you can do a privately hosted slack server (I can't remember the open source clones at the moment) and encourage bi-lingual employees to use it in an effort to assist in communication there during troubleshooting.

    • RE: Phone Calls Over WiFi

I create sub-accounts with VOIP.MS and register my cell phone with their service directly via CSipSimple andoid app, no PBX required. It will work over WiFi or cell data.

    • RE: I am heartless?

If you hit an animal or anything else with a vehicle you stop and check to see what you hit. If you don't, you might as well be committing vehicular manslaughter, especially if it is on a road that is dark enough the driver couldn't discern WHAT he/she hit.

If you hit an animal and your first reaction isn't to stop and see what you hit, and subsequently try to help the animal if it is a pet, you're probably an asshole. All legal obligations aside, I'd hope you have a moral obligation to ensure the well being of any living thing that you might inadvertently cause harm to. People incapable of empathy toward animals are a waste of space.

Cool beans, thanks for the quick info everyone. X it is!

Baltic is showing backordered until July

They have always been $50 + shipping. Amazon is typically $60 with free shipping/prime.

Yeah, it looks like B&H is running at ~$59 on backorder.

Ah, I couldn't remember if the X or the Lite was the preferred model for small/home networks. Any real benefit of choosing the Lite over X?

I can recollect seeing discussion of Ubiquiti's EdgeRouters, but I can't for the life of me remember the model that packs the best bang for the buck on performance and features.

      Thoughts, suggestions, alternatives?

    • RE: What Are You Doing Right Now

I am sitting down at my desk for the first time in 9 days after surviving a 4 state, 1900+ mile, 20 brewery, 13 winery, 1 distillery loop around Lake Michigan. I've been here for an hour and I'm ready to go back on vacation already.

    • RE: Hours I work/PTO

I'm currently on one of those unlimited paid vacation plans. If I work regular 40 hour weeks it comes in at right about 5 weeks of vacation. We have a running graph that shows hours worked versus hours "needed". As long as our running total stays above or at least touches the 1900 hours per year line, we can take vacation as much and as often as we want. (assuming it doesn't interfere with current projects) If you stay above that 1900 hour line for too long they make you take a week or two off to recharge your batteries.

And I also get to set my own schedule. I've been fairly high on hours for the last couple of months, so I've been coming in at 10:30/11 in the morning and leaving at 5:30/6pm most days. Strangely enough, when I do take vacation time I seem to end up working the majority of the hours I was off back into my schedule.

All of the above examples seem like reasons to get fired at most places I've heard of.

      ...

      In what way?

It was mostly sarcasm, but the thinking part has me concerned. I know adults who don't have shoe laces because they don't know how / can't learn to tie them.

I wear flipflops orZems to work almost everyday. I can tie my shoes, I just see it as a negative impact on my time and productivity... 😛

We are going to cut across 40 from NC to Las Vegas going to do the whole Grand Canyon thing 🙂

That is awesome, Grand Canyon is totally worth the stop. I'm quite surprised how much I enjoyed the Grand Canyon on my visit last year. I'd like to go back sometime and do a rim to rim hike.
