    • RE: How Best to Present External Video Series

You might look at making a post based off of the CompTIA Objectives list for the Network+, and then filling in relevant videos and other material underneath each specific section.

That would make the material easier to consume, and quick to reference.

    • RE: Ubiquiti Edge Router X questions.

I believe there is a wizard for setting up dual WAN. I've not configured any specific QoS via the Web GUI yet, but I can't imagine it would be much of a hassle. Everything I've setup via the web GUI has been very intuitive. I'm not powering my current AP off of the PoE passthrough, but I believe it should work. I'm sure someone will be chiming in soon that has it working in the wild.

I'm posting from Ubuntu 16.04.1 and it's okay, but it's no Mint. But it installs on this laptop, so it is what it is.

I only choose Ubuntu for my desktop installs because it is quick, easy, and what most of my Engineers prefer/standardize things on. If I really wanted to put time and effort into it I would probably go with Mint or OpenSUSE. Right now, and until I get the time to put some serious study into powershell, I spend 90%+ time inside a terminal multiplexer accessed via a Putty session to one of my jump boxes. I might touch a Linux desktop once every couple weeks? As long as I have a working Firefox or Chrome browser I'm generally content.

Out of curiosity, and to help derail this thread just a little bit more... @scottalanmiller / @Minion-Queen and @JaredBusch , how do you setup your remote employees? Do you provide them with systems to work from and/or furnish a stipend for internet access? Or do you just build that into their salary to simplify things from your end?

    • RE: I did a thing, have a quick Linux question

I like KVM, though I agree with Scott that XenServer is probably the first option you'll want to use; especially if you'll be seeking assistance from this community. A lot of the common tools and packages (libvirt and virt-manager come to mind) are compatible with both Xen and KVM-QEMU. Once you've got a familiarity with XenServer, a lot of what you've learned will translate to managing a KVM hypervisor.

Are those RAM sticks tiny? otherwise why so many?

Because I can? 😄 The price of 72GB versus 48GB was negligible at the time of purchase so I went ahead and went with the larger amount and had them populate all the slots.

negligible? as in $20? or $200?

Less than $30 at the time I purchased it., the seller on ebay actually put the components I wanted together in a bundle for me and agreed on the price.

Now here's another question...would you let an interviewer see your lab setup? Or would it just become another interview question that you blag your way through.

How would one go about doing that, though, I wonder?

SSH in from my phone... 😄

Actually, on a more serious note, I've got a friend that is thinking about leaving the insurance industry to pursue IT. Is this something that might be open to people pursuing IT as a career alternative? If so I might point him in this direction to see if he is interested. He's already started following along with Scott's book on Linux Administration to try and get the basics down, so he has some familiarity with the ML community (I think).

That's an option, is he really interested in actual interning, though? I mean NTG really can be a rapid path for building a career, but few adults, especially those with established careers, really want to take the time to do that. What aspects of IT is he looking into? Have him post on this thread.

I believe he's initially looking to generalize, more with a focus on Unix/Linux based systems, and possibly eventually move into doing some coding/programming.

His primary goal is to build knowledge and experience to eventually transition out of the Insurance industry and into an IT position with better opportunity for growth. I think he's already hit the ceiling at his current position, and aside from transitioning into Management (which I don't think he is interested in) really can't go any further.

I'll mention this thread to him the next time we speak and have him chime in if he's interested.

    • RE: Disable folder redirection for specific users

@chrisnbrooks said in Disable folder redirection for specific users:

In my GP implementation of Folder Redirection, I have a User Group for Redirected Folders and my policy only applies to users in that group. In order to disable Redirection, I simply remove that user from the group. Just had to do this for a user today, which reminded me of this thread. Hope you found an elegant solution here!

Yeah, the functionality I needed was having users keep their folder redirection, but only removing it on specific devices. My problem ended up being my user turning their Windows registry into swiss cheese trying to "fix" the folder redirection themselves before coming to me. Once I did a rebuild and repeated the process I found the problem wasn't my group policy implementation.

Everything is now working as expected/desired.
