RE: Confused About XenOrchestra Backups

RE: Xen orchestra - anyone?
@scottalanmiller The thing is we don't want to use a system dependency (ie Debian package), but use a SMB lib directly to write on the share. And the lib we are using is pretty messy, we made a fork and continue to improve it.

RE: Hiring a tech for support, based in US
Well, we estimated that I could handle up to 250 customers myself, which was relatively correct. I can push this to 300, but it's a bit hard to do anything else. Because we are beyond this number today, it affects also the rest of the dev team, which is partly good (to get quickly why something they did is wrong) but it's now too much to handle.

RE: Restoring Deltas on XenOrchestra
@DustinB3403 Just click on restore, you'll have a list of delta to select. See:

RE: Xen Orchestra Delta Restore
@coliver Well, I'm not considering myself as a developer ^^ But I'm the original creator of the project (created back in 2009 and very old Xen version!) because I needed a web interface to manage my VMs, as a former Sysadmin
edit: I'm now the project leader, didn't leave it since then

RE: Confused About XenOrchestra Backups
@hobbit666 We are cutting Edge (pun intended).
Official support is for Chrome and FF. We don't have resources to validate on all browser. But, if the issue is well identified we can fix it (like we fixed Safari issue recently). If you have info in your browser console about the issue, paste it here

RE: XenServer Backup
@DustinB3403 By developing the need of a constant connection to our server to check some stuff. Something like that will pop in the next month (to allow a more flexible invoicing on XO usage for a certain kind of customers).
But that's a lot of time just to think to protect the product and not developing features. I prefer releasing cool features first ^^ And you? (talking to the whole topic )

RE: Hiring a tech for support, based in US
@danp pay range is a bit hard, that will be really variable depending on people applying. And I don't want that our lack of expertise hiring in US, combined with a poor pay range choice, make us miss opportunities.
I'll update the work days, but it's pretty standard: M-F, no weekends.

RE: Confused About XenOrchestra Backups
Open an issue and ideally send a PR with the fix: that would be your first (easy) contribution to the project

RE: XenServer Backup
This thread is more a business thread than a technical one now ^^ But yeah, this is the point: having people liking your product but test it first. That's also the goal of the trial version. It helped us a lot to convert people from Free to paid plans.

RE: What Are You Doing Right Now
@scottalanmiller Careful, that's exactly that kind of talk that would destroy Open Source done by small companies. I have a lot of work to convince investors that's a possible business, same with consultant helping with business. If they read this, tomorrow every new stuff will become closed source
XO is the software, XOA is the product. That's not a miracle, you pay for a service to enjoy XOA (turnkey, updates, QA and support). When you are running a reasonably sized company, time is even more important than a relatively small monthly fee.
But yes, we'll add more services in XOA, to help people people to understand more the real value of it

RE: XenServer Backup
@anonymous Nobody will pay just for support. Except huge companies, but our prices are flat. So not scalable at ALL. You need to put value in your product. Remember: a software itself is NOT a product.
XO : a software
XOA : a product (appliance + updater + support)The only solution is to scale prices. And even with that, we need to be bigger than we are currently.

RE: What Are You Doing Right Now
We already have a partner program @DustinB3403
-
RE: What Are You Doing Right Now
I can't remember all the partner names (a dozen). See the program description here: https://xen-orchestra.com/#!/partner

RE: XenServer Backup
@anonymous no problem, it's interesting I assume (to understand from the "other side").
In an ideal world, I would like to give XOA for free to anyone. That's just not possible.

RE: What Are You Doing Right Now
@thwr On the US scale, yes We have a "big" XOA user in your town (DESY)

RE: XenServer Backup
@coliver Full transparency in our documentation: https://xen-orchestra.com/docs/roadmap.html
edit: Forever Forward Incremental Backup is not displayed there, but it's for this month. Continuous replication too. And a first beta of our self service portal.
