@Dashrender said in Free Upgrade to Windows 10 in 2019 from Windows 7 and Windows 8.1:

What kind of licenses are these?

There are all kinds of licenses on sale Volume, Retail... Those Win7 is Retail, but we can also buy, for example Win10 Enterprise 2016 VL for 65 euros.

@scottalanmiller said in Free Upgrade to Windows 10 in 2019 from Windows 7 and Windows 8.1:

He said he is in the EU. OEM restrictions are illegal there. He can freely transfer licenses of any type. This isn't the US where software sales can be restricted.

This is completly correct - OEM restrictions are illegal, as any restrictions to resell used license.

@Dashrender said in Free Upgrade to Windows 10 in 2019 from Windows 7 and Windows 8.1:

aww - I kinda gathered that from JB's slap down a min ago.. didn't know OEM licensing wasn't legal there.

OEM restriction in original sale is legal I think (you need to buy it with new HW), but after that, the buyer have all rights to resell that license to anybody

But the average company does not do that and does not expect IT to actually provide guidance. Bigger companies, yes.

OK, but most average companies do not last long 🙂

the owners or business managers absolutely demand control of IT decisions and IT is just there to look pretty or something.

I think it's not problem who makes decisions - the real question is does management listen to their staff or expect them to "do what they're told to do".
Good management always listen to their subordinates.

@scottalanmiller Yeah, that's annoying, and Win7 is not easy to install on most new hardware.

I know I'm a little late on this, but why are most of you discussing business relationships like "do ti or you're fired". I worked in 4 companies so far, and I never experienced that.
I always assume that I am paid to do what is best for my boss/company. Very often, that means to explain to my boss that I believe we have better solution than what he asks/suggests as solution.
I don't remember I have ever had problems with my approach.

@scottalanmiller Is it legal to buy Windows 7 Pro license and install Windows 10 with MCT and key from that Win7Pro without first installing Win7Pro on that PC?

We can buy used Win7Pro licenses for 30EUR/35$ (in EU it is legal to buy/sell used licenses)

    • RE: Introducing MeshCentral on SAMIT as a Remote Access and Support Tool for the SMB IT Department

I thought this thread should be about Meshcentral2 for SMB... 🙂

Then @scottalanmiller tries to teach us how to have better battery life, after we "observed" his problem with battery life on the above video 🙂

Batteries - My laptops are on charging whenever it is convenient, I use it more hours per day than my colleagues, and I have best battery life after few years. Thats my experience...

P.S. I hope @scottalanmiller will not feel offended with the above text

    • RE: Redefining the purpose of a corporation

@nadnerB That is just marketing of company's public image. And it surely does make financial sense for Apple.
Scott's example of NTG is probably something different.
The company I work for have priorities other than financial, but that is not true for Apple or many other signatories there.

    • RE: Meshcentral2 - cannot add computers to mesh

I solved this - problem was, after I changed port on MC2, I needed to download new MeshAgents that are setup for that port and install them to monitored PCs

    • Meshcentral2 - cannot add computers to mesh

I installed Meshcentral2 on Fedora 30, following instructions of @JaredBusch in topic https://mangolassi.it/topic/18767/install-meshcentral2-on-fedora-29-with-mongodb.

      • I did not installed MongoDB nor LetsEncrypt.
      • I setup MC2 to work on port 11222.

      I have 2 problems:

      1. I can't add computers to MC2 (I tried with Linux Mint 19 and Windows 7).
MC2 gives me errors (in stdout.txt) "Agent bad web cert hash..." from all machines that I have installed agent on.
      2. I need to start MC2 with --notls option to access it with browser (both locally and over WAN).

      Can you help, please!

Yeah, the feeling that they get it for "free" when it's costly here makes people think "well, if Americans PAY for it, and we get it for free, it MUST be a good deal." Ugh.

Slightly different: "If it's legaly free, it's probably not that good"

Do you think that we should use XCP-ng instead of XenServer?
(we have XenServer 7.0 on another machine, but we should probably update that one also)

@pete-s I know what is Dell T30. We already have one (with SSD), and we use it as DB server and file server in accounting department (8 users), and it's fine for that.
I did not plan to put any additional boot drive (as @JaredBusch said), 4TB should be enough for some time, and I can even add 2 more disks in future if we need it.
Yes, it's almost like desktop. But it's ok, since we can reuse it, when we won't need it as server.
However, thank you all for comments!

    • RE: XenServer / NextCloud / backup build to move away form Dropbox

@wirestyle22 15-20 users are from all parts of company. Company has about 150 employees but most of them do not use PCs (production workers, retail...).
2 accounting departments would probably use Nextcloud as single user each (1 Nextcloud client in department that shares folder within department).
This is the way we use Dropbox now.

    • XenServer / NextCloud / backup build to move away form Dropbox

I want to build small server that needs to perform these functions:

      1. Nextcloud server for 15-20 users (users are not in LAN) - we want to move from Dropbox where we have 100.000+ files taking 78GB space. Users would have Nextcloud clients installed.
      2. Backup target for 3 off-site servers (totally 1TB space is enough)
      3. VM with Piler (mailpiler.org) for mail archiving (I guess we have about 20GB of mails per year)

I thought to build it with this:

      1. Dell T30 - E3-1225v5 CPU, 8GB RAM - 400 EUR (cca $460)
      2. Two pieces of 4TB WD Red in RAID 1 - 105 EUR (cca $120) each
      3. XenServer 7.5 as hypervisor (or XCP-ng)
      • one VM for Nextcloud - 2CPU, 4GB RAM
      • one VM for Piler mail achiver
      • backup target on separate VM or on one of the above

      My questions:

      1. Do you think my config is OK, or do you recommend something else?
      2. Where should I put my space for backup target - on Nextcloud or on another VM (or together with Piler)?
      3. Would it be better to have 4x2TB drives in RAID 10 instead od 2x4TB drives in RAID 1? I don't think that storage performance should be an issue, as we have internet connection as limiting factor (10Mbps up / 30Mbps down)

      MikroTik hEX RB750Gr3 for $54

I need to replace old 16-port 100Mb switch on our site with 11PCs and few other LAN clients.

What 24-port switch would you recommend in combination with this Mikrotik hEX?
Or do you recommend some 2in1 router+switch device? (I am not experienced with networking so I do not know if this makes sense).

Currently, we use TP-Link's TL-R480T+ Load Balance Router between our 16-port Switch and 2 internet connections (one 4G mobile, and one 10/10 on optical fiber)

    • RE: Why is the Third World Running Windows?

I am from Croatia, and would like to dump Windows and move to Linux. But situation here is like this:

      1. My company use WIndows because our bookkeeping app does not run on Linux (also does not run reliably with WIne). We also have cash-desk app for our 21 retail stores that also works on Windows only :-((

      2. MS Excel is important in our daily work. We have some in-house Excel VBA macros that automate some important tasks. So, on most PCs we have LibreOffice, but we still need MS Excel on some PCs because of VBA macros. I personally wrote those macros, but I have not found time to learn macro programming with LibreOffice Calc to fully leave MS Excel. And for MS Office we need MS WIndows :-((

      3. Microsoft's software is in our schools and I hate that. My daughter is in 5th grade (11 years old) and they get tasks to prepare presentaions in PowerPoint :-((

      4. For private use, most people use pirated WIndows and MS Office (or OEM WIndows preinstalled). So they do not care about price.

This way everyone is used to WIndows OS, no matter how basic their needs are.
