@katie So does Apple use Windows Server to manage their computers or is it just a free-for-all at HQ?
I cant remember, since it's been about 7 years since I worked for them. I vaguely remember a mixed server environment. It's likely quite a bit different now.

RE: Looking for a Career Path
@scottalanmiller There used to be hardware for Mac OSX server - the XServe. The Fruit company quit with that in 2010.
You can read about it here. -
Remote session printing
I am trying to collect more information about printing through a remote desktop session from MacOS to a terminal server for a client.
Works fine through Windows, and previously worked well from the Macs. One of the Macs takes as long as 25 minutes for the print job to hit the queue.
I am posting to see if anyone here has knowledge of how print jobs are routed through the remote connection that can help me troubleshoot this. Thanks!

RE: Looking for a Career Path
@scottalanmiller I agree - the *NIX operating systems are similar in nature, but are all different flavours in a family.

RE: Installing OpenSuse 13.1 On A Server Via USB
I don't know much about installing Linux from a flash drive, but I can tell you that having a bootable windows flash drive was key to imaging the machines in many of my old shops.

This is the MacOS Thread.
Roll call!
Who's using Macs? Macs in Enterprise environments?
I've been supporting Macs in my IT career since 1996 - it's been an interesting road to see the changes that have come from Apple during that time. In the early part of the 2000s, I started to see a trend whereupon Apple was moving away from the professional market and more closely into consumer sales. Many of my users at that time were also concerned about it as well - these were graphic designers, editorial staffers, and video production folks for the most part. Though the new Mac Pros are interesting, I think they are a bit spendy. Most environments can do common tasks on MacOS using a basic Mac mini with beefed up RAM.For those of you who touch Macs in your day-to-day support, what are your thoughts in the changes in Apple computers over the past 10 years or so?
To me it looks like they're trying to incorporate more iOS features into the regular desktop OS. It's interesting, though I'm not so sure how much is bling and how much will prove to be useful. -
RE: Who is Eating Mangoes?
@scottalanmiller I love mangoes. I have a small mango tree in front of my house, though it'll be awhile before it has fruits.
My neighbours have a large one on the other side of the fence. No idea when the seasons is for them here. -
RE: CalendarTree
Calendering is a pretty critical tool - it's good to see another alternative available.

Needed: inexpensive web hosting for home user website.
I set up a website for a friend of mine about 7 years ago.
She kept with the hosting company (IX) and now wants to move it to a different host because it's getting a little spendy. The registry on the domain is up next year, so that also will need renewal eventually. She wants to redesign it herself, I'm thinking a nice wordpress template might be up her alley. Back in the day, she used a piece of software called coffeecup.
Is there a very user-friendly hosting service out there that can include tech support for those with minimal web design experience? With support that can advise her about best practices in modern web design?
Thanks. -
RE: Elements of a good IT career
@Hubtech Yes, copious amounts of coffee. Critical and key.

RE: Should I stay or should I go?
@Hubtech I would go with the S4 - Samsung is known for their excellent mobile device displays. I have a Galaxy Note 3, and the display is gorgeous compared to the HTC displays I've seen. The S4 is comparable in a smaller size.

RE: New Enhancements Accounced for Office 365
@scottalanmiller It is very interesting to see that they are adding a new application to the portfolio. Even more interesting to see how it will be used.

@ajstringham I agree, growth is critical in an IT career.

Elements of a good IT career
What are some elements of a good IT career? This is different than a good job, in that a job is not necessarily a permanent thing.
In a good IT career, there are things like continuing education, new challenges, and the ability to stay employed.
I've met many IT professionals in different stages of their career over the years, all with different perspective.
What are the most efficacious traits it takes to maintain a good IT career? -
RE: The worst. job. EVER.
@scottalanmiller Some environments are better than others. I think I've been very lucky, also.

RE: The worst. job. EVER.
@ajstringham It's the IT career forum. Everyone's had a bad gig or two over the course of a career. :wink2:

The worst. job. EVER.
So tell me about the worst job ever.
Was it the manager?
Was it the environment?
Was it something else?
