RE: What Are You Doing Right Now
@gjacobse corruption in the raid array itself usually a disk error but not enough to flag the drive as bad unfortunately for me. Previous admin did a raid 5 not a raid 10 thus I am backing g up data while waiting for drive replacements to arrive

RE: What Are You Doing Right Now
Jsut realized I have been lacking in taking notes on the items that I do. Used to be really good at writing things down (I don't use onenote perfer good old paper and pen); trying to find notes on something I did back 2 years ago (pre-pandemic) and last notes I have are from 2018. Need to force myself back into teh note habbit, especiall as we're moving to a new model of zero trust/quazi lan less.

RE: What Are You Doing Right Now
Hey I had an interview today too! Local hardware distributor good track record looking to add to their tech support team. Their Corporate marketing manager recommended me for the position (Former co-worker, I wasn't asking them for a job) didnt even officially "apply" they just asked if I had a resume last week/ Went very well want me back next week for an in person walk though. (and hopefully an offer).
Now the questions going to become do I wan tot take a possible pay cut to go work for them? The job will definitely be a bit of a learning cureve but definitely what I want to do (more LInux admin and VoIP stuff which Im weak at now) -
RE: How Do You Replace Active Directory?
@scottalanmiller as I found in our case, AD here was adding absolutes 0% while actually creating more of an administrative headache. 99% of our applications here are "in the cloud" (unlike my old company) and all the DC was doing was print, some file shares, and 1 or 2 group policies (that weren't even working right!). So moving to Teams (see post in other discussion) will alleviate the file share; may build a linux file server for 1 or 2 use cases where Teams/Sharepoint won't work. Group policies are unnecessary and worst case we can upgrade our licenses and go Azure AD/Intune if we need to. Printing, well its printing and it sucks but we'll figure it out. Best is the CTO and President are on board without so much as a blink.

RE: What Are You Doing Right Now
@WrCombs Something to look forward to
Me to my "new" boss: "we should make this change to allow for better security, require everyone to MFA at least x amount"
Answer I'm expecting: We'll have to research it and pass it up the chain (that would have been my old job)
Answer I got: "You're the security officer, make it so"Me: When did I become the security officer?
New Boss: Just now! -
RE: What Are You Doing Right Now
@scottalanmiller Its nice because I-T is getting buy in from the start AND we're segmenting who does what, unlike my old place where it would be me doing all of it the day before we move.

RE: I am going to start an ISP
@NerdyDad Check and see if Cogent can come to your area. They have been very helpful with our Internet setup (we have an AS number and still had to pry-out of Verizon's hands our owned IP addresses). Also if Telia can get out there (have a PoP in Dallas) they have dirt cheap Tier-1 bandwidth. Wasn't someone on here doing a fiber mapping site as well that you could check?

RE: What Does Western NY Look Like?
@scottalanmiller Currently in Amherst. Grew up in Kenmore, lived in Lockport and North Tonawanda before "rooting" where I am now. While I've left and "visited" other areas still always came back.
