Remote Hyper-V Manager Woes
Based on a comment in another thread I decided to take a look at MS Hyper-V Server 2016.
Simple to install. I LOVE the feel of it at the console and through RDP. It takes me back to my Dos and Unix days.Plus, It's almost identical to ScreenConnect Backstage, which is my new favorite place to work.
However........ After a whole week, I still cannot mange it from my workstation.
I have everything except one piece set properly, based on hours and hours of reading and trying.
Is it even possible to manage a workgroup Hyper-V Server from a Domain PC through Hyper-V Manager?
I am getting this error:
An error occurred while attempting to connect to server. "R510-Hyperv". Check that the Virtual Machine Management service is running and that you are authorized to connect to the server. The operation is not supported.
That's cool, look what a bunch of hyphens did!
Virtual Machine Management services is running.
I can successfully map a drive to it with Net Use, I can successfully RDP to it, I can ping it by name...... I just can't get Hyper-V Manager to connect to it.
Any ideas? Anyone been here before?

RE: Job offer
The tech recruiting company will pay 25/hour , no paid days off,
...
+~$6.00 an hour.I think we would need to figure out the % of "raise?" A possible 30% raise may/may not be worth the risk.
32% not including the overtime.
On average I get anywhere from 5-10 a pay period for on call
So $25/hr @ New Job - 6$/hr (more than current job) = $19/hr @ Current Job
OT = $28.50/hr ($19*1.5) @ Current Job
5-10 hrs/week in OT; let's use 7.5hrs/wk @ Current Job
7.5hrs/wk = $213.75/wk in OT @ Current Job
$213.75/wk Ă· 40hrs/wk = $5.34/hr in OT at Current JobThe new job ($25/hr) without any possibility of OT is almost exactly the same wage as the current job with OT ($24.34/hr).
This is a 2.5% increase in pay.Not worth the risk.
I like his idea of staying put and continuing the job search.

Yeah, given that you are not in production yet. More stable, faster, more modern.
Invalid links. Can't download it.......
In Volume License Center? We have it in production, so it is definitely available.
Eval Center. I'll try VLC now.

RE: Veeam Company Announcement
@pmoncho In about a month, we'll be moving our last Unitrends client to Datto. We (as a business) completely dislike Unitrends. From their pricing, to their support, to their constant gimicks to get you to "upgrade" and lock in for another three years. Can't stand them......

The lack of oder in the winter makes nearly any cold temp tolerable in NYC.

Well - apparently Hyper-V 2019 has had an issue where RDS doesn't work.
That's some serious fail right there.
Yes. So I am in worse shape now. But I did find an KB fix to allow RDP to Hyper-V Server 2019: http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB4482887
This was released yesterday.

RE: Miscellaneous Tech News
Why Exchange admins should be very worried
If you haven’t already done so, this week you should be applying patches to your Exchange Servers. A reasonably easy to exploit vulnerability has been disclosed by Microsoft as CVE-2020-0688.

Operating Systems that you may enjoy?
There are many operating systems out there. Do any of you use any that are not-so-familiar for anything other than productivity for work or home?
I was doing some reading today and thought I install a few to what they were like.
I have no reason other than to satisfy my curiosity to explore....

RE: A LIFE AND FATHER'S ISSUES, NOT TECH
@MrWright4hire
I feel for you. I am a father. But you have to understand, you were not clear or accurate in your post.Let me explain why I was suspect by your post.
-
This statement "Enclosed, please find the LINK that explains some of the issues I'm facing and what I would like to achieve globally." Is less than accurate in the first half and unclear/confusing in the second half. The link said LINK, not a verbose description of the link. The link goes to a shortened URL, one I did not recognize. "achieve globally"? I thought you were looking to advance your cause not ask for money.
-
I did not recognize your name.
-
I clicked on your profile link, and see that you have posts, reputation, and have been a member since 2014. This is good.
-
But then I looked at the URL in your profile
HTTP://WWW.WRIGHTIT.ORG
which of course doesn't work. It doesn't matter if this is a typo, or the faults of the BB software, in today's cyber attack age, careful internet users would never click that link from their daily driver.
-
So even though I have no reason to have ill feelings toward you, and as a father, I do feel for you; I was very suspect.
-
Your post link and profile URL lends itself to be possible spam/click bait.
So, no offense intended, I wish you well and success for your son.
I can honestly say, had I been given a more clear understand and been informed in advance you were looking for assistance to fund your cause, I would have contributed without hesitation. I may still choose to contribute, but all of this could have been avoided with clarity. -

ScreenConnect; Microsoft Nagging; Sessiongroup Expressions
Last week Microsoft announced they will start nagging end users to upgrade to Windows 10. The nagging will start April 2019.
This created a need to be able to discuss, on the fly, which PCs at the customer are on Windows 7. I created this Accesslist Expression to show me the customer's Windows 7 PCs super quick.I hope you find it useful, or it gives you ideas of your own.
Setup your Custom Session Properties here:
Admin->Appearance->Web Resources->SessionProperty.CustomX.AccessVisible
Admin->Appearance->Web Resources->SessionProperty.CustomX.LabelTextSessionProperty.Custom1.AccessVisible = true
SessionProperty.Custom1.LabelText = Organization
SessionProperty.Custom2.AccessVisible = true
SessionProperty.Custom2.LabelText = DepartmentThen set these properties on each Access Client:
Organization = // Example: ABC Widget Company
Department = // Example: Admin, Accounting, Sales, C-Level, Maintenance, Logistics (Don't forget to put the Servers in a Department, I use "!Servers" to keep them at the top of the list)Next, create a new Session Group (at bottom of Access List)
Name = Customers
Session Filter = Blank (Although I have Access Clients that are not for the techs to see, so I use: CustomProperty1 <> 'Private' as the session filter to prevent our tech from seeing my personal access clients)
Subgroup Expression: Paste in the next block, it will accept it with CRLF as below to make it more readable, so no need to make it all one line before you pasteIIF (CustomProperty1 <> '' AND CustomProperty2 <> '', CustomProperty1, IIF (CustomProperty1 <> '' AND CustomProperty2 = '', CustomProperty1, IIF (CustomProperty1 = '' AND CustomProperty2 = '', '!UnNamed','!Error'))), CustomProperty2, IIF (GuestOperatingSystemName LIKE '*Server*', '!Servers', IIF (GuestOperatingSystemName LIKE '*Embedded*', 'Embedded OS', IIF (GuestOperatingSystemName LIKE '*Windows XP*', 'Windows XP PCs', IIF (GuestOperatingSystemName LIKE '*Windows 7*', 'Windows 7 PCs', IIF (GuestOperatingSystemName LIKE '*Windows 8*', 'Windows 8 PCs', IIF (GuestOperatingSystemName LIKE '*Windows 10*', 'Windows 10 PCs', IIF (GuestOperatingSystemName LIKE '*MAC*', 'MAC OS','')))))))
It creates an Access list that looks like this:
Customers ABC Widget Company Accounting Windows 10 PCs Windows 7 PCs Sales Windows 10 PCs Windows 7 PCs Marketing Windows 10 PCs Mac OS Maintenance Windows 7 PCs Windows 8 PCs Windows XP XYZ Manufacturing Accounting Windows 10 PCs Windows 7 PCs Sales Windows 10 PCs Windows 7 PCs Production Embedded OS
Enjoy!

RE: At Least 30,000 U.S. Organizations Newly Hacked Via Holes in Microsoft’s Exchange
@Dashrender said in At Least 30,000 U.S. Organizations Newly Hacked Via Holes in Microsoft’s Exchange:
All the more reason to move to hosted/cloud services.
True. In a normal on-prem scenario, the Admin to Company ratio is usually 1 to 1.
In a hosted/Cloud environment (MS365), the odds are very high that when an admin patches the server, it will be a 1 to MANY (and perhaps hundreds or thousands of MANYs!)
No less risk in a hosted/Cloud environment, but certainly more customer mail systems get patched faster.
