Most people have said just ROBOCOPY the files from the old file server (in this case, SBS 2003) to the new one (2012 R2 Virtual Machine) and it will keep the permissions intact and echo the different server name...correct?

I am running a robocopy from an old file server to a new one right now. I have been slowly robycopying everything over to the new server. Yes it will keep all the permissions.

That place is under water during a minor hurricane. Have you ever seen the storm surge signs in downtown? They have them in different places depending on the category of the hurricane. Its kind of scary. I remember going over the Howard Franklin Bridge during a tropical storm. There was water splashing on the bridge. I remember going 10mph over that bridge while the VAN was getting killed by the wind.

Not completely, though I think some parts are more prone to it than others. I live on the west side of town, out of the floodplain. It can get windy and wet, that's true. A small price for never having to shovel snow.
And in a tropical storm, I wouldn't be crossing any of the bridges. (unless I had to evacuate, and in that case I should have crossed long before the storm came through.)

Have you ever experienced a major hurricane?

Yes I have. It isn't fun, regardless of where you are when it hits.

Did you live in a different area?

The last major hurricane to make landfall in Tampa/St. Pete was in 1921. Tampa/ St. Pete would be underwater if anything Cat2 or higher were to make a direct hit.

    • RE: Are you using IEAK to deploy required settings for IE?

      @Dashrender said:

Excuse me.. it's actually both - some features are in one, and the rest are in the other. so you need both GPP and IEAK
and just as maddening - it appears you can only edit GPP for IE 10+ on Windows 8+ or Server 2012+, adding the administrative templates to Server 2008R2 or Windows 7 does not give you the GPP portions.

That has been the way to manage IE as far as I can remember. That's nothing new.

    • RE: Building my website

I used to do alot of stuff on ODESK.com which apparently is now one in the same as freelancers.com

      I learned alot of things:

      1. Pay decent money for a designer. There are people that will work for nothing, but there is a reason.
      2. Make your candidates present alot of information to you. Everybody on there, will except any job even if their skills arent strong in that particular subject. Make them create rough drafts, and present a clear plan before you even consider hiring them.
      3. Require Daily updates.
      4. Use this place for SEO. This is where cheap pays off. People will work for under a $1 an hour and just post your site all over the internet. Its very effective, but it takes alot of man hours.

Yes, I'm just north of there in St Pete. Haven't been laughing so much as feeling very blessed that I'm here and not further north. 😉
Perhaps try coming down more often.

Pay for it, Unless you have countless hours to post random blogs and backlinks.

I paid around $500 total to promote my fishing business. I climbed Google very quickly in a very competitive market. It was pretty easy to do since I am one the few fishing guides that is tech savy.

    • RE: Compatible toner / ink vs. genuine toner / ink

I have been using imitation toner for about 8 years now. I used to buy 100 toner cartridges at a time for the school district.

We would get 2-3 bad ones out of 100 pretty consistently. This was irritating, but at almost 75% savings on each cartridge it was definitely worth it.

P.S. I ordered thousands of these.

Note: This script only works when installing VNC. That was no problem for us since we were a couple revisions behind.

I just stopped the VNC service on each PC and pushed down the MSI and installed using the new password.

No one else here mentioned this, but I document everything for myself.

I document projects, daily tasks, common fix-its, and etc for myself. It does a few things for you. It shows you are a team player, it shows your value, it shows other potential employers your value, and you can CYA if anything ever goes wrong.

O'Rielly's is currently selling all of their MS Press books for 60% off - full non DRM ebooks. I picked up Excel and Outlook 2013.

Its alot easier to get an end user to participate in online training vs reading a book, though.

@scottalanmiller I am a "normal" and I am not sure how having a certification will help me help others. Perhaps it is in the training that I am best served. And for that I do not need a certification to study up. 😉

KnowledgeNet offers very reasonable Microsoft Office Course for end users. They also offer MOS training

      Sorry. The cert is MOS.

It used to be called MOUS when I got it back in Office 2000. Its definitely a good cert to have. It doesnt really spark much interest on my resume, but It comes in handy when I am working in Excel or Word.
