Wondering if anyone else creates a consolidated location of scripts, PS or batch to use at a later date when they have moved on... Generally some bit of code that seems useful elsewhere, and beneficial to have...

Here's to another week in the world of Windows system administration.

      If only every week wasn't such a bruiser. . . .

My current job has a lower stress level than my last, but the opportunity to work with Linux didn't pan out.

Is there really such a thing as a job with lower stress? in IT even? I've not been here at the new job long enough yet to have that. Seems I just started and it's been four weeks... where does the time go.

So....much...to...do... Oh look - Cat Videos.....

      Fighting the good GPO fight.

I love,... err hate GPOs.. I need to review a few to understand how things are being deployed / set. (eye roll).

Why do you hate GPOs? I love them!
They are window's version of ansible as far as I know.

Because they are great when they work as designed. and suck when they don't.

GP objects are a mess. I can't find any type of password policy,.. yet there is one.

Getting this Friday started,... Right now am the only one in the office with one on vacation, two working from home, and the remaining two either on a site visit or something...

Looking to get home to inspect the 3D print that finished about midnight. Then it's high time I dealt with the four pork loins so they can get put in the smoker...

shaking my head again at a process that I've made a suggestion on how to 'fix'

Several of the POS card scanners have an issue with the Windows Service stopping. Have to remote to the desktop to restart them...

Has to be a better way and one that doesn't keep requiring Human intervention which may take 5-20 minutes depending on IT availability.

Powershell script that runs once a minute (or once every x minutes) to check the service and restart it if needed?

My thoughts. Was about half way writing it when it was discovered that:

      Powershell is disabled ...

    • Broken Vendors Apps

How often is it that you run into a Vendor's Application that is broke AF!?

Came across another application that the vendor needs to have User write access to the
c:\program files (x86)\application folder. It's totally non functional until you added that permission.

      Why - (epic face palm)?

Ever wonder why the competition is so cheap....

The vendor that got a large account from us, and honestly they've been great to work with for handover up till now, asked us today to train them on how to manage phone systems as "part of the handover process"... three weeks after our engagement with the account had ended.

      Um.... what? No.

They needed training on things like "how to log in" and "how to add a new user" and "how to attach a phone."

For the record, this is FreePBX running totally vanilla, that we didn't even set up!

      That's a WTF, not just a "I can't even,.."

That company is not going to be around in five years. Good luck finding any upgrades then.
The whole idea is flawed in too many ways to list.

If you want to have your laptop for a number of years, just get one that can actually be opened and have components replaced. A lot of them can - almost everyone I'd say with exceptions such as apple. For example:

I tend to agree with you. My old Lenovo, you know the one I got the same time Dominica won one from SpiceWorld - it was easy to upgrade the SSD or RAM, really the main components one would upgrade.

Yeah, a lot of them are easy because laptops are made out of components anyway.

Here are videos of hundreds of laptops and how to open them and how to do upgrades:
      https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLpYZc4lOys6gtJj8-dr4pY1-m0yo_NYqn

The biggest waste is things like the monitor - they can generally last 8-12 years, so short of needing an upgrade there, there is nothing wrong with it, yet we are tossing it aside because we want a new processor.

Hmm... Can you still get newer or upgraded VGA monitors?

The just ordered and received Viewsonic monitors have VGA ports on them....

Likely how many of them are. $10 hotdog that is tasteless, and the $4 drink that is more ice then soda...

      /Sigh.
FML . Boss lady had a Coin Changer in her office for over 1 year. She gave it to me maybe a month ago. I had the coin changer working on the POS system Lab I have in the office in 45 minutes total (this was 2 weeks ago) so I did some documentation on it and passed it on to the tech i was working with.
We sent them a new cable to put on their existing Coin Changer (same POS system as my lab), 2 weeks ago, Apparently this call was passed onto me without me being on the email that passed the buck to me.
So now I'm putting out a fire on a client I've never worked with directly while taking the responsibility for this issue cause the other tech stopped responding to emails..
am I wrong to be Pissed off at this? - Maybe I'm over reacting to it. .

Nope, that's more than enough reason to be pissed off.

This is why I'm pretty much always 'pissed off'... That and it's the middle of the day, so why don't we just 'turn on Azure User Risk and sign in Risk Policies'
