    • a2 hosting - looks like a potential ransomware attack

Anybody else have any sites hosted there? One of my clients have a site there and it's been down for a few days - trying to procure some sort of offsite backup to re-upload somewhere else. I suspected some sort of ransomware attack when I came across this article:

      https://www.theregister.co.uk/2019/04/26/a2_hosting_outage/

At least one person in the comments mentions that he saw all of his files renamed with a *.lock extension via FTP.

@scottalanmiller I agree. NS main game has always been as a registrar. Curious who you guys like to use for web hosting and registar duties? I've always been a Dreamhost fan. I've also been pretty happy with GoDaddy as a registrar (even though I know some people aren't fans).

@scottalanmiller I agree with you. Again - I didn't set this up, but I can't recall a time in the past where a hosting company didn't have the ability to edit DNS records.

@scottalanmiller They are hosting a website and e-mail which they're being paid for.

@frodooftheshire That one tech where I had to say "that's not how the internet works" said - it was registered at Tucows so you need to talk to them. I said, "I understand that, but nameservers are pointing to you...so where are the records?" "I don't know...I see they point to us but I don't have any records. You should contact Tucows." LOL.

    • RE: DNS - am I taking crazy pills?

@scottalanmiller Exactly. That's verbatim what I told them, and they just responded, "you can't edit records if we weren't the registrar for the domain." "Really? You've created records...I can see them...why can't I edit them?" - They responded with the same line. I had to literally tell one support tech "that's not how the internet works."

    • RE: DNS - am I taking crazy pills?

@scottalanmiller Thanks guys....they made it seem like I was insane that if they were hosting the DNS that I should have the ability to edit, even if they weren't the original registrar. I've read a lot of good things about CloudFlare. I think that sounds like a good plan.

    • DNS - am I taking crazy pills?

So this morning I was working on setting up a new customer on Office 365. I needed to add the TXT record to verify domain ownership - something I've done a million times in the past. The customer's domain was registered at TUCOWS but their nameservers pointed to Network Solutions. So I go over to Network Solutions to add/modify DNS records.

I can't find anywhere under Network Solutions where I can modify DNS records. I can see they have a hosting plan and under there I see various DNS entires (A records, MX records, etc.) but I can't edit them. Support tells me in order to modify DNS entries (that exist as they've created them) the site needs to be registered with them. In short I had to re-create the A/MX/CNAME records that point to network solutions (because were not cutting over yet) in TUCOWS and then point the NAMESERVERS back to TUCOWS. I feel like in the past with other hosting companies I've just been able to edit the DNS records even if they weren't the registrar? I feel like this is the first time this has happened.

    • RE: USG Pro 4 and our Company Security

@scottalanmiller said in USG Pro 4 and our Company Security:

Another really important thing to point out is that a Unifi USG is a UTM. We never talk about that because that would be a shitty way to sell firewalls. UTM is nothing more than a firewall with some extra features (that we generally recommend against because they are either stupid and wasteful, or if needed shouldn't be on the firewall as that is horrible security practice) and the USG has some UTM features that you can turn on (but most of us don't.)

Unifi themselves wouldn't classify the USG as a UTM device. Are you saying because it's a firewall it should then be classified as a UTM? Thinking a UTM is worthless is one thing, but saying a firewall is a UTM because a UTM is simple a "firewall with worthless added features," seems bizarre.

I feel like we're comparing a VW GTI with a Porsche 911. "The 911 is just an expensive GTI with fancy features." A lot of people would say the Porsche is a waste of money...that both are German cars and get you from point A to B, but they're still not the same.

Maybe Ubiquiti recently added a bunch of features you would find on a Sonicwall/Fortigate/Juniper device?

** An amendment - it looks since I last looked they do IDS/IPS so if you factor that in with the firewall it technically would meet Wikipedia's definition of a UTM, but Ubiquiti would still never classify it as such since every device in that category usually offers some sort of gateway antivirus, content filtering, application control, spam filtering, etc.**

    • RE: Epson TM-T20II receipt printer - sometimes prints larger cutting off right side of receipt

We found a solution - setting the Epson printer as the default resolved the issue. Makes no sense. We discovered this because we moved the printer to a different computer and immediately had no issues. Then we realized Windows had set the Epson as the default because in settings this computer was set to "let windows manage my printer." When we went back to the other computer and switched it to the Epson receipt printer as default - voila - no weird issues on the first print.

    • RE: Epson TM-T20II receipt printer - sometimes prints larger cutting off right side of receipt

@Dashrender I'm not certain it was on 8.1 - it might have just been 8 and I'm not certain it was current with all IE updates. I would love to check the stats on the previous computer but the hard drive literally just kicked the bucket and it wont boot (it was already complaining about SMART errors - so we replaced it just in time) so I can't check anything on the previous machine. I tried changing the default browser to Chrome to see if I could get the program to open the window in Chrome and that didn't work. I'm going to call the software vendor to see if we can get the application to call on Chrome instead of IE.

    • Epson TM-T20II receipt printer - sometimes prints larger cutting off right side of receipt

      Hi guys,

I have chiropractic customer where we did a server migration and replaced all of the desktops in the office this last weekend. One of the front computers is a new Dell Optiplex AIO computer with Windows 10 Pro (current on Windows updates) that needs to print customer receipts to an Epson TM-T20II receipt printer. It's important to note that this printer previously was used with an HP AIO (running windows 8 ) without any issues.

When someone runs a credit card through the payment processor (Cash Practice) an IE window pop up with a receipt to print. When you then tell it to print to the TM-T20II printer it sometimes will print exactly how it should - centered on the paper and with nothing cut off. The problem is half of the time you will process a card and ask it to print and you get larger font and the text gets cut on the right hand side of the receipt. What's crazy is that any receipt that prints weird the first time will ALWAYS print correctly if you hit the print button a second time (on the same receipt in the same IE window)

I'm using Epson's latest advanced printer driver - 5.10 and while I found a firmware update for the TM-T20II it failed installation saying it wasn't compatible (there were multiple variations of this printer apparently). I worked with Epson support yesterday and they walked me through various self tests that all passed and asked me to call back tomorrow when the higher tier support techs are available.

I've simply never seen anything like this...the only consistency is that the second print always works. I've also tried uninstalling/reinstalling and using the older 5.09 driver with no success.

Maybe it's something weird with the current version of IE? A Windows bug? We're also looking at getting a newer TM-T88V printer to see if that helps.

    • Dell customer service....in America? Does it exist? Rant/Question

      Hi guys,

About two months ago I probably spent 10 hours of time trying to resolve a shipping issue with Dell/FedEx for one of my customers. A zip code mistake led to some computers/laptops not being delivered. Then FedEx decided to deliver them but Dell thought they were coming back to them so they shipped additional units. You get the idea. A real pain in the ass. I got so fed up because the sales agent I placed the order with didn't return my calls/e-mails and the customer service could barely understand me. They even argued with me. It went something like this:

"Sir, I can see this item is coming back to Dell...that is why we are shipping a replacement unit."

"I'm sorry, but it's not being shipped back to you guys. I'm looking right at it. The FedEx tracking information is wrong. The item was successfully delivered. Please do NOT send a replacement unit."

"Sir I understand. I'm sorry for the inconvenience. I can tell you it is coming back to us. We'll be shipping a replacement unit as soon as possible."

"No...PLEASE DO NOT DO THAT. IT'S NOT COMING BACK TO YOU. It's RIGHT in front of me. It's been delivered."

"Oh. My apologies. Thank you for your honesty. I'll cancel the replacement order."

Three days later replacement package arrives anyways

I finally called into Dell Pro Support (all the machines ordered were configured with it) and they were able to help me make some ground.

Cut to now - I've got a another customer that's gone through hell working with Dell customer service to get their order issues resolved. He had 8 monitors shipped to the wrong state (wrong office location) and he also received a damaged monitor at another office location. He descries it as "the worst customer experience" of his life. He's had it trying to resolve it on his own and wants my help.

Now to the question - is it possible to talk to someone in America to resolve this? Please tell me yes.

    • Searching multiple keywords in Outlook using advanced find/query builder - results aren't what they should be

      Hi guys,

I have a customer that's wanting to search a mailbox/online archive for multiple keywords (about 10). I'm noticing some strange results. Say the keywords are cat, dog, mouse, and cheetah. Using the OR operator and searching for cat OR dog OR cheetah will turn up less results than just searching for just cheetah or dog. It's almost as though it thinks I'm using AND instead of OR. Is there a limitation on how many keywords you can search for? As of right now my plan is to do separate searches for each keyword. The problem is that will lead to duplicate results, but since this for a legal matter I figure more is always better for less. Anybody ever run into this issue?

@dbeato I know. That's why I said it wasn't "entirely true." If he's looking at a new deployment he would have the option to purchase support. I should have clarified though.

Also, btw, I have a brand new Synolgoy NAS on my desk. It has both AFP & SMB enabled. I wanted to see what 10.12 would default to for mounting the share. Connecting using the hostname under the "shared" finder section OS 10.12 mounted using AFP.

    • RE: OSX 10.12 AFP VS SMB

So companies everywhere are wasting thousands upon thousands of dollars with zero benefit? Zero? I've been digging through forum posts (apple forums/spiceworks forums) for the last month or two regarding SMB and 10.10, 10.11, etc and it's easy to find lots of people that have suffered with a variety of different issues. Keep in mind most of these issues were with Apple computers connecting to Windows shares, but still.

Also, just to clarify - you personally support a good assortment of Apple users using SMB to connect to NAS shares? Meaning you can personally state that you haven't seen any issues with 10.12 connecting to SMB shares/searching with finder/etc? I'm not interested in how the technology is supposed to work, but in real day to day usage how well it works. For example, Apple's mail client supports exchange. Do you know how many weird issues I've personally (many others have reported too) had working With Apple's program not properly syncing with exchange? Enough to not recommend it.

    • OSX 10.12 AFP VS SMB

I have a client that I'm setting up with a new NAS (supports AFP & SMB) to replace their aging mac mini server. Question - on OSX 10.12 I know SMB is supposed to be the default, but AFP is still an option and I wanted to know if people think AFP is still the way to go (less issues) or Apple's gotten it's SMB ducks in a row?
