This place is super quiet today. I know I've had conference calls all morning.

Sure glad it's quiet for you...:
-A router I replaced last night didn't have licenses transferred to it, so all phones in two departments were not working this morning. Played with that a bit, then just stuck the old one back in until I can contact cisco.
-The network was sporadically crawling when we got in this morning. going from a speedtest of 70Mbps to 0.2Mbps. It was up and down. I was initially assuming network loop.
-A fiber connection between two buildings died at the same time we unplugged another switch (to try to track down the network loop). The two have absolutely nothing to do with each other. Ended up being a bad port on a switch in one of the buildings.
-When that switch was unplugged and the other one's port died, the network stabilized.

I don't even know wtf at this point, and I'm a bit fried. Gonna try to dial back for a little bit then jump back on it with some more clarity.

What am I doing right now?... Everything. lol. It's a hit the ground running sort of day. Scheduling replacing some DVR drives, getting ready to replace two routers with downtime being a very frowned on thing, getting a patch fiber between two locations to go live, preparing for a meeting...

Yeah, I'm not going home at 5 today. lol

See, I had an issue with the .7 because it was big enough to go dull and start writing lighter. I tried the .3, .5, .7, and .9 and found the .5 to be a good center.

A draftsman's trick I learned from an old draftsman. Slowly twist the pencil in your hand as you write. It prevents it from getting a "dull" side and keeps you from having to sharpen it as much. Not sure how well it works with mechanical pencils though.

It works very well, and I still need to do this with my .5, but with the .7 it was big enough that eventually you'd just end up with a rounded tip before you fully got through that section of lead

My workflow got too heavy, and I didn't have just one solution for note taking, so I ended up in a whirlwhind of chaos. I dropped back to purely pencil and paper for now, but I'm also looking to jump back into digital once I get my method down.

I plan on going with either Freedcamp or Asana for tasks, and I'm not sure yet for notes. OneNote is frowned on a bit here due to FIPS compliance, and I'm sure Evernote would be the same. Makes me think that even Freedcamp and Asana would fall into that category as well, which is part of the reason I'm taking my time finding a solution.

Lately my 'go to' pen is the Sharpie Pen,.. But I also like my Fisher Space Pen and the Foray Advance Ink Ballpoint .7mm Needle tip.

For pencils,.. wow.. lately its been whatever is closest, .. but the no. 2 Ticonderoga pencil seems to write a nice deep line. Granted it has to be sharpened..

Mechanicals - I have a load of .5mm lead from when I did office clean outs 20 years ago - but the .7mm is a better line

I have a few composition books I have had cut down so it will match my tablet as well as some Rite in the Rain books

Office work - legal pad,.. and it's nearly an inch thick as I need to review / mark off things that are done -

See, I had an issue with the .7 because it was big enough to go dull and start writing lighter. I tried the .3, .5, .7, and .9 and found the .5 to be a good center.

I've moved over to a binder for paper. I was going to go Bullet Journal style, but I go through about 150 sheets of paper a month. A notebook doesn't get me through a month, and Bullet Journal is lined up to last about six. lol.

I use it as a bookmark thing mostly to help me find sites with info I use more than once. I use the Keep app on my Android phone and it works OK for me.

I dislike Keep, but the reasons are sort of complicated. Because it is so easy to put notes in, it can become real cluttered, real fast. and there is no good way to organize the notes. Tags, sure, but I'm a bit old fashioned and like me a good structure to organize.

Which is funny, because I'm 25...

    • RE: Favorite Writing Utensils?

@obsolesce I didn't used to write much at all, but my influx of stuff coming at me to do and watch got massive, and I didn't ever find a suitable digital solution before then, so I was scattered between several programs and services, which just made it worse. So, I dropped back and am currently doing only paper, until I get a solid foundation and method for keeping track of all of this. Then I figure I can find a single system to meet those needs.

Started numbering my pages of notes and tasks and such. I'm up at 116 for this month. That should give you a decent idea on the speed of things for me nowadays lol.

    • Favorite Writing Utensils?

I'm in the middle of a complete overhaul of my tasks system, and decided to drop back purely to pencil and paper. Since I currently write so much, I decided to spring a bit on a quality pen and quality pencil. Spring here being a relative term meaning "I hated the bulk pens and pencils and wanted to get some unique ones that were of decent quality." Not to be mistaken with price lol.

Pen: Zebra F-701 Stainless Steel, Fine point pen. Amazon Staples OfficeMax
Pencil: Pentel GraphGear 1000 0.5mm, Stainless steel with Black Grips. Amazon Staples OfficeMax

I do have to say I love the way both of these write. The pen I don't use all that often, but when I do, I am glad I found it.

The pencil I use the most. I went as far as researching and testing lead sizes and pencil types, and settled on this one. It has an eraser under the cap, but I also keep the black polymer eraser that came with it in my pocket, and this may be going into way too much detail for a lot of people, but man can that thing erase. Barely even need to put pressure on the paper and your marks almost completely disappear.

What about you guys. Do you have a favorite writing utensil? Have you tried others?

Slept 12 hours last night. Still woke up feeling exhausted. Sometimes I think my body is just giving up on life lol.

      It's definitely Friday.

I'm not sure I've gotten that much sleep in a single night in a decade. I only get 8+ a couple times a year.

Usually I get about six. 1am to 7am. Which might explain why I felt so off this morning lol

@penguinwrangler agreed, but still. You manage to fix your entire travel budget for work. I just recently had to get a loan for a car for work. I probably could have made do with it for everything else, because I live on the edge of a city, so if that were an option for me I'd be saving about $600 a month!

$600!? For a single car? My wife and my car with insurance is just over 600$/month! We have new-ish vehicles too both from 2014.

Yep. About $240 a month for the loan, and I live in Michigan, so not only do I get initially screwed on insurance, my driving record over the last 5 years includes about 8 claims, with one being my fault. However, no fault state, so it doesn't matter if I did it or not. Deer? Rates go up. Dude pulled out in front of me and totaled my car? Rates go up.

Then the icing on the cake is that, due to that totaling, I didn't have insurance for a few months. So, rates went up. I'm currently paying $380 a month for insurance. Just me and the one car.

EDIT: And, didn't turn 25 until just after getting insurance, so rates are up for that too.

      Damn, that's unfortunate.

Downright insane. lol. But, to me it rolls back to a saying I've adopted and accepted:
"My life is an adventure, and that isn't by choice."
