    • RE: Office 365 via GoDaddy?

Does anyone trust or even like GoDaddy? First year discounts are always nice but then what happens at year 2?

The differences are mainly in support, I'd argue many providers will offer better than Godaddy for support based on my experiences with them.

Oh there is some of that in the UK as well. Just not as rampant. We're a more down to earth bunch.

@Carnival-Boy - Do you not tend to get swarmed with sales calls from recruiters who want you to sign up with them?

Sending them to an article say "I don't care about customer service" and "I won't be there to help after the sale". You can't just hand out cookie cutter stuff to clients.

      Oh no not at all.

These articles are the key facts, they in no way will address every single question a potential client will have, they give the key details and the main headlines of the area. They are NOT a substitute for engaging with clients, they are a resource which clients can freely access without the need for "gated marketing" tactics.

@Carnival-Boy - The SEO is a nice bonus but the main goal is education.

If a client asks "What is Office 365" there is already a written article that can be sent to them to read with the key facts to help them make a decision, instead of crafting a PDF document, plus the material is freely available to any prospective clients who visit, they don't need to call or phone to get an idea of how their business can benefit from these products, ideally they would choose Dara IT to deliver that service but if clients are better informed and are able to ask better questions, then the industry will benefit.

      http://community.spiceworks.com/topic/1028889-new-eu-legislation-forcing-encryption-on-any-email-containing-personal-data?page=1#entry-4753669

Sophos are doing their SEO bit of creating articles that are trying to A.) Make you worried about EU law B.) make you buy their products.

These articles are meant to be about giving information so that you can make a vendor neutral choice about your IT solution.

Read a Webroot article, you'll want to buy Webroot.
Read a Microsoft article, you'll want to buy Microsoft
Read a Dara IT article, you should be equipped to ask the right questions of your vendor.

Holds a riot shield in advance

I've written a few pieces, the goal of them is to draw attention to products, technologies and standards in IT which can be education for users and IT guys, a way of starting a conversation about the right way of doing things.

I'd be keen to hear feedback on if you would find these helpful for you or your end users.

      Where did you hear that?

Spent ages trawling through different forums, articles, a lot of them boiled down to
"We don't know if the data is truly gone, so just take a hammer and nail through the storage chips to be safe"

      Again, not a programmer but...

What's wrong with using those resources remotely so that the laptop becomes just an interface to do the work? A more reliable desktop/server with far better performance so that programming goes quicker surely is the way to go?

Why are people buying MBPs? Most people don't need MBPs for performance, a MBA (Got one 🙂 ) works wonders for most tasks.

...Yes I'm talking about MS Office 🙂 Should have said.

In my brain "Office" means Microsoft Office by default.

It might let you do it with an unlicensed trial install, but only one user at a time.

The article wasn't telling you to use techsoup to get 0365 they don't offer it. It's an information article.

I think the wording generally encourages you to use Tech Soup, Especially when you read points 4, 6 and 9

    • RE: Ideas to better setup a small non-profit

      This bit makes me cringe:

"Before you can gain access to Office 365’s donated E1 plan, your organization needs to meet Microsoft’s eligibility requirements. Microsoft, with help from TechSoup Canada, evaluates your eligibility during the 30-day E3 trial period. Approvals can take 1-4 weeks, but the process will be faster for organizations already registered with TechSoup Canada."

I don't know about Canada, but we got approval within a few days. No need for a third party. I suspect they word it like this because tech soup get brownie points from MS.
