It's company owned, and I don't care to keep anything personal on it, even if it's a dual boot. Strictly work. It just keeps all cards and what-ifs completely off the table. It's best that way.

Why not? This recent exploit was patched by MS 2 months ago. Only one of my clients systems was affected by this and it was a Windows 7 unmanaged box.

      https://wavebox.io

Using this now and loving it. I have my ticketing system, 3 different webmail accounts, and other sites all in one tool.

There is a free edition but the pro is only £15 a year, If you need an Outlook replacement for all the different accounts, give this a try.

Yes but Apple has always had a walled garden approach to their iOS devices.

You can have more freedom and more risk or more security and less freedom, not both.

    • RE: Pentest - Who would you recommend?

I am clearly biased but I've gotta throw my 2 cents in here.

      https://darait.co.uk/files/darait-samplesecurityaudit-feb-2017.pdf

What you receive entirely depends on the scope, for the audit above they wanted a zero scanning check to see what their external IT provider missed out after a breach which cost quite a bit of money. The external provider left out a lot even after they got told this was happening.

Might be worth us having a chat.

@s.hackleman said in Pentest - Who would you recommend?:

I used to use Trustwave for external PCI pen testing.

PCI compliance is an absolute joke. As are the auditors who charge money to "test" for compliance.

How to be compliant really quickly?

      • Get second internet connection, All ports in blocked.
      • Place PCI traffic onto that internet connection and isolate it on its own network.
      • Ask to run the test, success, you passed.

    • RE: Doubts regarding VoIP system

When 2 VoIP phones on the same system call each other directly, it is pure data, same as sending emails or transferring files. So if you are calling phones inside your network (whether it be in the same building or not) there should not be a charge for this.

The exception to this is when you convert the VoIP to call a phone number which means it leaves your network and goes to a telephone exchange, this is where you incur costs.

This is a basic approximation of what happens.

@Himura1 said in Windows 10 volume licensing questions:

If I don't have a legit qualifying OS for a few systems, lets say 10, what would be the way to go? Buy 10 Retail license first and then 1 upgrade VL license?

That's one option. Assuming your one VL is so that you can image instead of doing manual individual installs, yes. However MOST people would go with OEM here. The chances that you'd want higher cost retail and want to move them around is low. Possible, but low.

The most typical approach here is all OEM. Generally if you are using Windows you want it to be the only OS you ever use on that hardware.

Is it okay to install an OEM license to a PC that's running a illegal OS? I thought OEM is for resale only.

OEM licenses are only approved if you are refurbishing the system for resale. They are not intended for end users to purchase. That's the official MS rule.

Are there companies who buy OEM licenses to get compliant? Many. Has anyone ever been punished of it? Not that I've heard of.

    • Free is never free

I like my money. I like not spending it, I like getting a good deal, finding a bargain or better, getting something for free. Many of us do

But its never free, its not free to the person who gave it to me, the company who made it or the resources used to create it.

So, free e-guide on how to backup your business is offered. In exchange for the "free" guide, you pay for it with your contact details and become a lead. This is called gated marketing, same way you'd pay a toll when crossing a bridge, you pay information to get free stuff.

Now let's look at free software. Starts with the words "I want a free thing which solves this specific problem" It could be CRM, Finance, Security, It does not matter, the problem is we often look at open source software as being fantastic because it is free.

It is great because companies can see all the raw code, they can audit it, different people can contribute and the product gets better but there is a cost to using it, its not in the buying of the software it lies in:

      • Cost of training, do you know how to use it?
      • Cost of deployment
      • Cost of migrating from 1 system to another
      • Cost of reliability, is this tool reliable? Is it tested? Is it safe?

Who pays for all the above? Have you factored it in?

IT professionals can introduce you to lower cost, lower risk, faster and more reliable tools to get stuff done but none of it is free. If anyone ever says "free tool" someone is paying for it.

If you are offered free, be suspicious, if someone offers you something at a big discount, beware.

Sometimes you do get a generous gift, sometimes you really do get a good deal but most of the time, its a trap for later down the line.

    • RE: Why does CloudatCost charge in US currency for a Candian Company?

      @scottalanmiller said:

Already in another community someone thought you were American and were not going to look into you further because they are in the EU and the EU avoids anything hosted in the US by standard practice

      Sounds like me 🙂

In the cloutatcost.com site, the only reference I can find to Canada is this line in the terms and conditions

"19.3 Governing Law. This Agreement shall be governed by the laws of Ontario and the laws of Canada applicable therein, without reference to its principles of conflict of laws, and the parties shall attorn to the jurisdiction of the Courts of Ontario for all matters arising under this Agreement."

Currency issues aside, I think it would be worth promoting the non-US hosting as a feature, lot of guys in Europe will swarm you as most hosting providers are in the US only.

Sending them to an article say "I don't care about customer service" and "I won't be there to help after the sale". You can't just hand out cookie cutter stuff to clients.

      Oh no not at all.

These articles are the key facts, they in no way will address every single question a potential client will have, they give the key details and the main headlines of the area. They are NOT a substitute for engaging with clients, they are a resource which clients can freely access without the need for "gated marketing" tactics.

    • New to Vlans.

My brain is not working tonight, this should be simple but I'm missing the obvious.

Existing network 192.168.1.1 for private LAN (I know the range is bad, going to change it)

Looking to add a new network on 10.0.0.1 to go from Unifi APs to the internet with no access to the LAN, whilst having the hidden SSID for private LAN enabled.

DHCP/DNS for the LAN is already provided by the windows server, my plan was to use the gateway firewall as the DHCP for the guest network using a separate VLan.

I have already set this up on my Sonicwall Gateway to provide DHCP on VLan 100.

When I get to the HP Managed switches between the Sonicwall, this is the bit my brain goes "wha"

      VLAN.tiff

These switches were pre-set before I got near them, You can see I've added NGuest below as ID-100 but the tagged/untagged concept confuses me, I've done reading on various sites explaining how a VLAN adds a "tag" to a packet so that the switch keeps them separate when going across the network, what I can't work out is how tagged/untagged works.

Thanks in advance. This is probably a bit too basic for some 🙂
