i always go to batteries plus and get the batteries. They are 3rd party and haven't had any issues with them.
edit: should say that while yes they are more expensive than let's say amazon. It's the fact that i can drive to the store get them and install them in 1 day.

RE: Kiting someone along after an interview
RAM I know the feeling I have been strung along like that before. It was my first venture into IT and it was an entry level HD job. I sent me resume, interviewed and for the next 3 months they strung me along. They kept telling me I was their # 1 candidate. Then after the 3rd month I called and told them to stop string me along and they said "oh we forgot to tell you we filled that position 2 months ago" I was so furious that I sent a nicely worded (somehow very professional) that the way they treated me was highly un-professional and that when I did get into the IT job line I would spread the word that this company is not one you want to work for.

RE: IRS Hard Drives Destroyed?
@Bill-Kindle i can't help but smile at this one. Ryan is from my state, which is awesome. He is correct, the IRS expects us to keep all of this information but yet they cannot keep 6 months of emails? wtf. Do as we say but not as we do?

RE: Did *Glassholes over pay?
i saw google refuted this but has yet to give an exact price

RE: Is my Resume' Crap?
@Bill-Kindle i don't believe the 1 page rule applies anymore. Mine is 2 pages and had positive feedback with that length from recruiters and hr people.

RE: Invisible ATM Card skimming
or everyone could just switch to a system that uses smartphones, a qr code that expires after 45 seconds and your 2 factor authentication on your smartphones banking app.
nothing can be skimmed in the current methods doing this way that I am aware of.

@Dashrender said:
you can get to the Internet Explorer options through the control panel
tried and wouldn't load, however i found a resolution to this. Turns out IE was corrupted so i uninstalled v9, dropped it back to v8, then reinstalled v9 and that resolved the issue. Stupid corruption.

A job shouldn't ever be based on what someone choses to do with their time outside of the office. You've obviously never applied for a high-level position. Your life goes under the magnifying glass, including social media posts, etc. That's absolutely how it's done.
that is beyond the scope of the OP in my opinion. There were no qualifiers put on what type of position was being applied for. The question was asked, would you hire someone who does not have a home lab? I have been in IT for 9 years so no, I haven't applied for a high level position.

RE: Donut Destroyer and the Drone
get well soon DD. And may I kindly suggest you find a different profession since this is now your second run in with a drone in less than 12 months? I mean you must be like a cat where you have 9 lives since you already fell out of a tree trying to retrieve a drone and lived, now this?

@MattSpeller IMHO the point is to have something you can completely screw up, fix, rebuild, etc without having any repercussions. Sometimes something should work a certain way theoretically but doesn't. If I'm not sure I use the test environment. If I want to build something like Rocketchat, Nextcloud, etc. I just build it and play with it. It's great.
counterpoint, if you need it for your job, why are you doing it at home?

RE: Teamviewer hacked
I have had my work Surface Pro 3 taken over Twice while teamviewer was running. Changed all Passwords, enabled 2FA and it still happened again. Contacted Teamviewer Support and what did they say? They said it must have been my fault and their software had no security holes. My Co-workers computer was also taken over, however he didn't have 2FA enabled. Nothing was compromised on our systems but we are now in the search for a new provider. Teamviewer can no longer be trusted! Their support is crap. They play, let's blame the users and not actually look at our software.
edit: I should add that I had a 18 character password with letters, numbers, caps as well as 2FA enabled plus the normal work security settings. Teamviewer was the hole, not our system.

If the goal is to have a huge tablet with a crappy Metro interface, yeah it's good for that.

for me, if it is for work, it is on company provided equipment, period. I do not use personal stuff for work in any capacity without getting reimbursed (such as using my car).

Edit: for clarity, points against them
- poor communication
- its ultimately their software
- could have put in stronger password requirements
- etc
Poor communication, certainly.
Ultimately their software... I don't agree. Ultimately it is end user access. If TV didn't have a breach, it's ultimately on the end user.
Stronger passwords requirements... not relevant. It's not their responsibility nor do those things really protect you.
Then what do you have to say for my case? Passwords changed from an 18 character password to 20+, unattended access disabled, computer wiped and my computer was still compromised using their software. How can I not point the finger at their software having a security hole?
None of that is related to what I said. I only said that IF they didn't have a breach, they they are not at fault. If they DID have a breach the post does not apply.
So I'm unclear of the question.
Sorry miss-ready what you wrote.

RE: I always feel like Android is watching me...
so in other words you have to download the app (which takes advantage of this loophole). This is not new and this is why i tell people to pay attention to what they are downloading, but hey this is why we have jobs right? Because people fail to pay attention, their phone/computer/electronic device gets hijaked and then they claim they didn't do anything. This is why I don't download any apps on my phone that I have not researched and fully vetted.

It's kinda simple. You're building a team. Do you pick people looking for a paycheck, or people with a passion about what you're doing? If you have the option, you're looking for passion... or you shouldn't be the one doing the hiring.
once again passion shouldn't be determined on if they do stuff outside of working hours. I work to get a paycheck yes, but I also show passion for my job while doing so.
Not good enough when there is a huge line of people behind you who show not only passion while at work, but also while at home. You're hamstringing yourself and saying it's not fair that they choose to be passionate always, and you only some of the time.
it's your choice - it's not a wrong choice, it's simply a choice.. and as such, your life will go different directions.
Bring this to Scott's constant talks about college. The person who goes into hotel staff our of HS, versus the one who goes to college. The non college guy will be light years ahead learning wise in the real world.
Sadly, so many uppers today will hold the non college people down because they (the uppers) think that college is some kind of right of passage - but that's becoming less and less the case these days.
So the people like me (that have hobbies in something other than what I do for a living) get screwed because they aren't willing to put time in after work to learn more things?
I have been successful in my life thus far, and not having a home lab hasn't held me back (that I am aware of). I learn what I need to for the job I am doing right now. If a new job requires me to learn new things, then I will. I am just not willing to sacrifice the few hours I have at home with my family to dedicate to a job. I already spend 50+ hours a week doing IT related things at work, the last thing I want to do is go home and do more of that. I guess I am just different and like my time outside of the IT world.

300 is nothing We moved thousands when we dropped LogMeIn!
300 is a lot when i'm the only one doing IT support for the company. I am sure I could write a script to do an uninstall, but the last time I did that, things went sideways and we had to end up manually uninstalling vipre a/v on about 80 computers.

RE: Surface Pro 3 Dock?
@garak0410 as i was told by the sales reps the 1/2 dock won't work with the 3 because of the size difference.

I will add to this discussion with this.
When I look to hire another person for @Bundy-Associates that I will most certainly be looking for the self motivated person that is going to be able to work in a very atypical environment compared to most places.
Someone with a lab environment that teaches themselves outside of work will most certainly rank over some 8-5 working Joe. @david-wiese and @RojoLoco will most certainly not be employed by me.
I work 24/7. I may only average 6 to 8 hours per day and 42 hours per week. But those hours are spread out over all 24 hours of the day and all 7 days of the week.
Any employee of ours will be expected to do the same.
I personally wouldn't want to work for an organization like that. I value my time and would not be expected to work like that. That sounds horrible. I guess for positions like that it takes a special kind of person that has no life outside of the job.
Also that description right there is what is wrong with the American culture. To much emphasis put on work and not enough put on life outside of it. Like I have already stated, I work to live, not live to work.
