Can you disable the firewall on the SQL server temporarily and try it? You might fine that it needs more configuration.

Maybe check the connection? Did the token ring concentrator go down?
Nope, it was unplugged and the token got lost under the couch.

I'm sure there is a default password burnt into those devices that all carriers know that allows them to configure them for their networks.

but I didn't realize a clean install couldn't get rid of the Superfish exploit.
The Superfish exploit was built into the WiFi driver. That's why you couldn't get around it. The hardware had been modified so you couldn't run the OEM driver on the machine.
to solve this problem, I ended up replacing the WiFi NIC with an OEM intel card and driver - not the kind of solution anyone should have to do.

Starwind Replication to DR Site
Of course if your talking about doing starwind between the business site and the DR location, what kind of bandwidth do you need?
I know Hub has 10 mil ping times.

Yeah, Rocket makes Slack kind of nutty to even consider.
Someone makes an expensive product that people seem like, so the Open Source community makes a clone that's free - I love it!

Starwind Two Node Setup
Assuming both nodes in a two node setup are the same. Is it better to split the VM load between the servers, meaning Starwind has to replicate in both directions, or is it better to run them all from a single host replicating in one direction?

RE: What Are You Doing Right Now
I just had to install Java for an accounting website a client just signed on for.
I'm glad my boss just agreed before we purchase any services that use computers that it will now be run through IT to make sure we can avoid this kind of crap whenever possible.

RE: Password policies, forced password changes are bad.
I had one of my doctors kick this back at me a few years ago when I was making password policies for the company.
In the end I agreed that changing them frequently was stupid and that watching logs and locking users out after 5 bad attempts is much better.
At the time we went with 8 character Upper, Lower, and number password requirements. I would like to change that to 12 characters only Upper and Lower requirements... the Upper and Lower are only there to keep someone from making aaaaaaaaaaaa as their password.

If you're looking to buy Dell Equipment (even if you aren't) you can open the process with Dell, get their DPack and that will tell you your current usage.

RE: MangoLassi
@MattSpeller For me it's about just making everything online encrypted.
Hide the important things in the noise. Right now the use of encryption is more of a flashing red light to those looking that someone has something to hide. OK that's over stating it, there are plenty of sites that use encryption, but I'd rather the sea just be nothing but.

Ad supported websites are starting to reap what they sew. So many bad ads, and automation setups that allow scammers to load malware into ads.

RE: Storage Question
This project is similar to Dustin's. You're basically starting over.
Great way to start that conversation is with a list of current servers and your goals. The goals don't include hardware typically, FYI.
Goals could be more reliable, lower power/heating/cooling/consolidation, etc.

My tax rate (counting healthcare) is something like 35% when I looked at my last paystub for 2015. Refund this will be about $3k because I forgot to change the amounts last fall like I generally do once I have paid in enough to cover my taxes.
That's weird - why would you pay in early? In fact, why not do the opposite, short them as much as possible, bank the cash and send them a check?
It's the world's worst savings plan! I've known people who used taxes like a savings account before, not such a great way to go about things. Personally I've got it to the point where it's as close to zero at tax time as possible (normally $40 or so either way.)
Because I forgot to adjust my W4 amounts last year. I normally do that about September once I have a solid grip on my expected tax for the year. I have long aimed for a ~$100 owe/refund amount.
If it wasn't for possible penalties, I'd pay zero all year and just write a check every year on April 15, get the interest myself.

RE: Group Policy Central Store for ADMX templates
Cached mode for 2016 is disabled just like all the rest, yeah!
I do this because calendars don't play nice when you're opening up 12 other people calendars regularly, and so are 80 other people.
No cached mode means you're working live on the system at all times, or your not working at all.

HSAs are good for anyone that has medical expenses. They lower your tax burden right off, and can be used for a wide range of expenses that might not seem to fit the category, e.g. chiropractic care, dentists, contacts, etc. It might not be useful for everyone to contribute the maximum allowable to it, but I think there can be value for just about anyone.
But for many that benefit is outweighed by the time spent managing your expense to setup the HSA and make claims against it.
Our bank gave us a debit card that charges against the HSA. All we have to do is save our receipts for taxes.
I've seen that done, that's a very nice process.
I agree, I'm lucky, unlike Kelly, I spend way less than the HSA allowed deposits, I have nearly two years of deductibles ready to go... plus I can use HSA for things like glasses, lasik and dental as well.
