@scottalanmiller Yeah, Twitter is still down. Spiceworks is down too.

      I'm on SW right now . . .

I'm still getting a DNS error on all browsers.

I never saw any outages from here on the east coast. . .

Weird. I wonder if it affected west coast more?

@coliver How is Lore? I've seen it on my feed

Really good, some of the other podcasts I listen to recommended it. Lots of history and my daughter really loves (falls asleep to) the guy's voice.

      I'll give it a shot.

Speaking of falling asleep to podcasts, check out Sleep With Me. It's whole purpose it to put you to sleep. The host tells rambling stories in a monotonous voice and it puts me out INSTANTLY.

    • RE: Nintendo Switch Announced

I admire Nintendo's insistence on taking risks in what seems to be a stagnant console war, and I think that the Switch as an idea is great--being able to take your "home console" anywhere--but what it ultimately comes down to is game selection, and theirs isn't great.

Nintendo hasn't had a good console since the SNES in my opinion. The N64 was better than anything since then, but was nothing but a gimmick, the SNES era was the last time that Nintendo bothered to care about making good games. Everything past the SNES has been dependent on gimmicks to sell what are otherwise absolute garbage games.

How DARE you talk smack about the N64! That was the console of my generation, easily.

They really kinda hurt themselves by not aggressively going after app developers early on, and they got the reputation of "not having apps" on their platform.

They did go after developers, but they had nothing to offer them. Not having apps was bad, being loaded with scam apps and promoting them as the real apps and no usable app store, those were the killers that I saw. That and pointless or negative features being touted and nothing of value to users.

@scottalanmiller said in NYPD opts for Windows Phone over iOS and Android:

No, Windows phone isn't likely to do that, it's already a dead platform. BlackBerry got in early and built their reputation before iPhone and Android were around. Windows Phone is already on its way out, not on its way up. Microsoft has been actively phasing it out themselves (whether in mind share, apps, development, accessories, etc.) There will always be some IT manager with a personal agenda that will do something incredibly foolish to make deployments keep happening here and there. This is only news because the decision was so ridiculous, not because it shows Windows Phone adoption increasing. It actually shows the opposite, that adoption is so low now that a single police department choosing it is so absurd as to qualify as news.

Totally--that's why I was surprised to see this decision. I didn't know if MS was making a concerted effort at going after that market now that there was somewhat of a "hole" there.

      http://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/nypd-windows-phone/

Smartphones have made policing easier....but Windows Phone? That's criminal.

The NYPD worked with Microsoft to develop apps specific for the phone/NYPD to help with paperwork, policies, remote management, etc.

Do you think Windows Phone will run the route of Blackberry and become the "enterprise" mobile of choice?

    • The Friday Fun Blog!

Each week, I surf around the Internet for my favorite time-wasting links and then I compile them all into one handy link roundup that we call the Friday Fun Blog.

Basically, it's a fancy time waster.

This week, we have a video of a humpback whale breach, a pretty compelling Bigfoot video, and why Hillary Clinton is talking to Tom DeLonge of Blink-182 about UFO's.

That's HORRIBLE! I have to sit through 3 hours of shoot me in the face before I'd care about it? The writers should be fired - well the whole project team should be canned. I give most shows 2 episodes to hook me.

I was thinking the opposite, it's horrible that show writers feel the need to hit people with all of the hooks and interest in the first few minutes or risk the short attention spans causing people to not keep watching. This is why shows and movies keep moving towards the more and more banal - people don't get engaged in the stories. They need constant action or they don't stick with it.

Especially with Stranger Things, which was likely written as one cohesive story and then broken up into "episodes". You gotta build the foundation before you add the slick whirpool jacuzzi, @Dashrender 🙂

We just published a blog this morning on RAID arrays, fault tolerance, etc. For someone that isn't well versed in the data storage aspect, I thought it was a nice little insight into how it works.
