Spent most of the day cleaning up and re-arranging my "office". I can see my desk again!

RE: how does this work? Modems/IPs/PCI Scans
@JaredBusch example also is great for home use if you have IoT devices. I have an ERL behind a cable modem and this keeps everything I want separated from my normal LAN.

RE: Netgear Insight Managed Switches
At one of my clients we installed SFP+ cards in a group of Hyper-V hosts a few years ago. It was worth the extra cost IMO.

RE: Fiber to Ethernet Media Converter, What's your preference?
My reasons for a low-end switch with SFP ports was also due to warranty. Most of the stand-alone media converters have a 1 year warranty. I can get Netgear, D-Link, etc with a Lifetime Warranty. Made sense in my application.

RE: Fiber to Ethernet Media Converter, What's your preference?
I've had good luck with Allied-Telesis and Transition Networks. Last time I did a project where I needed to convert - I just used a cheap D-Link or Netgear switch on each end with SFP ports. Have some still deployed going on 4 years now and no issues. This was used to deliver service to a fuel station and isolate it.

RE: What Are You Doing Right Now
@travisdh1 I did that a few months ago too... Luckily I ran a backup job minutes before. Was able to restore. I was so mad at myself. Lesson learned.

RE: 4g or 5g LTE cellular modem options?
The Netgear have been good units and a lot cheaper than Cradlepoint.

RE: Wi-Fi calling?
I use it all the time on my iPhone when I have poor service. Works great for me.

RE: IP phones with no PBX
I read some other threads and posts first because I remembered this came up a while back. I am also going to assume Yealink for phones? Any particular models to stay away from?

IP phones with no PBX
I know it is possible to hang a phone directly off of voip.ms or [insert provider] but.... I have a recent customer that has 2 POTS lines at his office. He is retiring soon and wants to have the calls ring at his office and at his home which is in another town. If I port both lines to a SIP provider, will it work to have 2 phones connected to the same account and have both DIDs ring simultaneously to both phones? I could put a PBX in Vultr but that seems overkill. Very low call volume. There is only 1 user and 2 phones. There is a solid WAN connection at both locations. There would be no growth or adding lines as it is a 1 man shop. I know RingCentral would be a solution but it seems there may be alternatives.

RE: Weather Kiosk
darksky.net is a good weather site and no ads, videos, etc. Very clean interface.

RE: Time for a mobile phone upgrade
I tried a Samsung a couple years ago after being a long time iPhone user. The battery life was horrible and the "volume warning" whenever you had anything plugged into the headphone jack drove me nuts. I took it back within the 15 day return window and went back to the iPhone. I too feel that it does everything I have ever needed it to do.

RE: Jared - OBS
I downloaded OBS last week but now my camera has gone missing. Hoping to dive into it soon and make a useful video.

RE: Can Windows 7 Still Upgrade to Windows 10
I have upgraded approx 20 Win7 Pro machines to Win10 Pro in the past couple of months - 2 last week in fact. They all accepted the Win 7 product key and show that Windows is activated with a digital license. Zero issues.

RE: Pentagon Warns Against Using Lenovo Equipment
I had to laugh about it. Last year I got dinged for not blocking github and the similar sites. This time they tell me I can go on github and get a piece of software that will compare my firewall config and detect any changes. The logic makes ZERO sense.

RE: Pentagon Warns Against Using Lenovo Equipment
We had an IT and Security audit last week. Guess what the auditor was sporting... A Lenovo laptop!

RE: Domain Planning: Network shares or ,..
Dealing with this now as well. Don't forget bandwidth when everything is offsite. A lot of folks I deal with cannot get a decent amount of bandwidth or at a reasonable price. Some people refuse to work with files in a browser. So many variables.

RE: Miscellaneous Tech News
@pmoncho This is the exact reason my kids had their own devices from early on.
