Best of luck, if you pull this off, you will be your own boss.
Thanks. My only concern is I will be trading a much shorter commute for more working hours. Will I even see my kids during the week besides when they are already in bed?
This should be a given with any startup in its initial years. My older 2 kids are getting to the age that I would be teaching them to mount and sync CPE's and properly seal outdoor grommets When the first storm comes through and knocks all your antennas off spectrum you will have help.
Don't forget the drip loop...

RE: Network in industrial environments
I installed a few of the wall racks with filters on the bottom and fans on top for exhaust like the ones Jared mentioned. Don't remember the brand or price. The equipment stayed very clean and cool. Hard part is remembering to change/clean the filters regularly depending on the environment.

RE: Ubiquity Unifi AP
I use Vultr and have each customer set up as a different site. Works perfect.

Nethserver - Who uses it and for which workloads?
I am running Nethserver for a local email server for internal-only messages. Curious to know if anyone else uses it.

RE: What Are You Doing Right Now
Thanks guys. Learned some new things today. I set up 2 more NC instances in my lab. Trying now to decide the best route to move the data directory out of the default location. Seems everything I read takes a different approach to it. I want to build a new instance with a large amount of storage and migrate a ton of files. Even NC recommends ( I know you are all aware of this )moving the /data out of /www but finding it difficult settling on a method to do so.

Access local share with MS Account
2 machines that are Windows 10 Pro and signed in with a MS account - What is the proper way to access a shared folder on a local network? Going to start a different post with the main problem for another discussion as to where this is coming from. The credentials are causing the issue.

Updated 2 more desktops from F29 to F30 and building another F30 KVM host.

RE: What Are You Doing Right Now
I did a good one today - Backed up my PC to an internal 1Tb drive so I could reinstall W10 (on the same SSD). Realized I formatted the 1Tb drive when going through the install wizard. No files to move back to my fresh PC. Oops. Luckily, I have another backup on an external drive.

RE: What Are You Doing Right Now
Stuck in a loop trying to log into Microsoft VLSC. I sign in with my email and it tells me to use another email that is linked. Try using that one and it says it doesn't exist. It TOLD me which email was linked. Oh, and the 'personal' or 'work' logins are ridiculous.....

RE: XByte sale on R510s
I picked up 2 720xd machines with 6 - 4Tb drives, dual Xeons, and 64G RAM on one of the specials a couple months ago. Don't have the exact specs in front of me right now. Total to the door for both was less than $4400. Nice machines. Added the extra warranty as well.

FreePBX
After many, many hours of research and discussions, I have convinced one of my clients to give FreePBX a try. I'll be honest in saying I have no "real world" experience with it other than testing it in a VM at home. I've worked with plenty legacy PBX equipment - all the major players that come to mind.
They were in the market for a new system and looked to me to give them ideas. At first, I was going to go with Cisco, but I couldn't justify the cost to implement a 25 extension system. Next was Avaya. I have a few clients with the IPOffice 500 system and they have no complaints. I am trying to get away from the "nickel and dime you for everything" model and vendor lock-in too. FreePBX feels like a good fit. I believe we will go with a Sangoma appliance and phones. I though about running it as a VM but they only have 1 legacy server (physical) and no VM host. The cost of a host to run VMs outweighs the appliance cost.
I don't mind learning on-the-fly and will gain tons by setting up the new system. Anyway, enough rambling. If you folks have any pointers or advice, feel free to blast away! -
RE: How flexible are your hours?
I would have to say they are pretty flexible but I do not take advantage of it.

RE: Firewalls, the good, the bad, and the ugly.
I run an ERL at home and I recommend them too for other SMB/home use. They just work, work well, and are very affordable.

RE: What Are You Doing Right Now
@gjacobse I just installed 7 Unifi G3 Dome cameras Sunday for a client and was impressed with the image quality and ease of use. Now I am just exploring my options again. I will probably use Unifi at my house when I get motivated enough.

RE: Going over SFF: what do you think of micro business-grade desktops?
I'm planning on deploying 24 SFF machines for a school computer lab. The limited space they have is a big factor. Plan on mounting them on the back of the monitors. Plenty of horsepower for their workload.

@scottalanmiller People push unRaid on Reddit like mad. It is comical the advice these folks give.

MSP Removes Good Hyper-V to Install Older, Bad Setup
I introduced a friend to Hyper-V as he was wasting resources on physical servers. I installed Hyper-V Server on 2 new host machines and helped him migrate a few servers. A few weeks later, I went back to help with a firewall issue. While I was away, his normal MSP had him blow out my installs and load 2012 Server (not R2) and the Hyper-V role. They said it was easier for them to manage remotely. I'm still puzzled.
