Appliance more of a pre-configured device?

Kind of. But what about after you start using it?

Depends if you start messing with it in ways not intended by its manufacturer...

I think marketing has a lot to do with the definition. An appliance (to me) is a branded product that comes to the consumer in a box with a pretty picture and a logo on it. You pull it out, plug it in, and have minimal configuration (that you can get support to help you with) to integrate it into your network. You update it with the updates the manufacturer grants you, and you can configure what the manufacturer allows you access to.

I would absolutely put a Windows PC in this category. Remember when some PC's used to come with the "break this seal and void the warranty" sticker on the back of the case? The point is that it's not intended to be a user-serviced item. To me, that's the defining characteristic.

If you want to compare it to cars, I would say that adding seat covers and custom rims to your new factory-original car doesn't really count as "modified". Swap the motor out, put a turbo and an intercooler on it, aftermarket, and now you've properly modded your car.

I just saw a document from Humana (our insurance provider) that was a request to verify the number of employees we have.... and then it said to "be sure to use whole numbers, no decimal points"... smdh.

Doesn't that just make you want so badly to put 47.2 there? 😛

      It has to.

Or like the square root of -1

Oh, now you're just imagining things...

I spent about 3 years doing installs for Unitrends, so I saw the internal workings of a few hundred SMB businesses over that time. We're not talking Fortune 100 companies, but many businesses with multiple locations, schools, municipalities, and some in Canada and the UK. Of those varied businesses/entities, I would be making a large stretch to estimate that even 10% of all of the servers I saw were non-MS. It was probably between 5 and 10%, closer to 5%. Maybe 1% AIX. I saw a small handful of Groupwise, and a slight bit more Novell Netware. Ubuntu was more popular than RHEL. Mac was virtually non-existent. In fact, I think one company wanted to protect about 25 workstations (not the norm in any way, but we're talking about Mac-user types...), and I don't think I touched more than 3 Macs outside of that in 3 years.

Although that also limits you to specifically seeing Unitrends customers - a product that specifically targets the Windows space. So it's not an even cross section.

Cross-section is irrelevant. The question was what is the percent windows for wherever you are wherever you've seen. You can push your agenda and think that oh my gosh all these other places are not windows but you're not there you're making assumptions based on your own biases

As I specifically noted that it was related to Unitrends, and was primarily SMB, that shows that I defined the space I was describing and didn't just say "companies everywhere".

Since we have SAM and he is anti windows, I will list our clients stuff

      Client 1: 99% Windows
      Client 2: 90% Windows
      Client 3: 100% Windows
      Client 4: 99% Windows
      Client 5: 90% Windows

In most cases the only server that's not windows is a PBX server.

either your precentages are off, or your clients have a huge number of servers 😛

      Poor math skills...
She is counting VM's and not physical boxes alone, and her percentages are not accurate. On average, most of those clients have 1 or 2 Linux VM's and every other thing (server or workstation) in their environment is Windows. It's a very low percentage of Linux anything that we ever deal with.

I've recently seen a bit of this company around, as they make guitar and bass amps. Should they be referred to as "FAT" or "Fuchs"? I haven't seen any of their products in any sweepstakes or giveaways thus far, so I'm pretty sure you have to pay for their stuff if you want any, since there seem to have been literally zero Fuchs given at this point. But, I digress...

You posted this just so you could use the last sentence and not get modded, ha ha.

I was literally looking at a music supply store ad and saw the full name for the first time. I had heard of Fuchs amps, but didn't see that the full name would be abbreviated FAT. If it weren't for it being a dude's last name, I would completely think that was done on purpose. It may have been anyway.

And the whole thing lent itself nicely to the setup for the final delivery... 🙂

I just looked at the nodeBB stats for this site, and for the past 24 months, we have averaged slightly over 1.5M views per month. That's pretty cool! If you look at the average over the last 12 months, it's just over 2M per month.

Yep, meant punny, I blame Chrome for not having punny in it's dictionary.... I completely rely on the computers in my life to correct my spelling.

It's cool @JaredBusch relies on Siri to not make him look like a complete ass.
