    • Backup Restore Tests

How often do you test your backups and do you follow any check lists for that? I want to start a scheduled task list for such. Currently this is done without a set schedule and i want to involve my team members to follow a set schedule and update the results somewhere. What do you guys use? An excel sheet?

    • RE: Scoop- Chocolatey alternative

How is Scoop different to Chocolatey?

      • Installs to ~/scoop/ by default You can set up your own programs and not worry that they'll interfere with other users' programs (or theirs with yours, perhaps more importantly). You can optionally choose to install programs system-wide if you have admin rights.

      • No UAC popups, doesn't require admin rights. Since programs are installed just for your user account, you won't be interrupted by UAC popups.

      • Doesn't pollute your path. Where possible, Scoop puts your program shims in a single directory and just adds that to your path

      • Doesn't use NuGet. NuGet is a great solution to the problem of managing software library dependencies. Scoop avoids this problem altogether: each program you install is isolated and independent.

      • Simpler than packaging Scoop isn't a package manager, rather it reads plain JSON manifests that describe how to install a program and its dependencies.

      • Simpler app repo. Scoop just uses git for its app repo. You can create your own repo, or even just a single file that describes an app to install.

      • Can't install a specific version of a program. Scoop doesn't allow installing every version release of a program, just the latest stable version. There are some exceptions, e.g. Python 2.7 and Ruby 1.9 which are commonly required—these can be installed from python27 and ruby19.

      • Focuses on developer tools. While it would be easy to install Skype with Scoop, this will probably never be in Scoop's main bucket (app repository). Scoop focuses on open-source, command-line developer tools.

    • Scoop- Chocolatey alternative

Just formatted my wok laptop and was installing basic softwares. Forgot the name Chocolatey and was looking for homebrew alternative and found "Scoop"

Scoop command-line installer for Windows, and scoop installs programs to your home directory by default. So you don’t need admin permissions to install programs, and you won’t see UAC popups every time you need to add or remove a program.

Ah ha, it's a FAT app only, no online component. Not available for Linux, so this makes the O365 suite not universally the same as far as platforms. There is no web interface for Teams. I have it on my phone, but not my desktop.

Teams has web interface too, the only thing that doesnt work on the web yet is the video chat and screen sharing. MS Teams supports edge, chrome and Firefox but yeah i dont see a native desktop client yet for Linux.

@Ambarishrh I saw that, doesn't really give me anything beyond what cPHulk is doing already. Might have to try it on some local systems tho.

cPHulk uses a MySQL database that does not use iptables in the manner CSF is using. It is more intensive to block using cPHulk due to the fact it blocks based on logging authentications to a MySQL database and then determining actions based on it. It is actually more streamlined and easier to manage CSF / LFD due to it dealing directly with iptables via flat files.

    • RE: Suddenly hit from lots of different places today.

We use ConfigServer Firewall/ CSF on all our servers (CentOS7 now, previously was on CentOS6)

Its a Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) firewall, Login/Intrusion Detection and Security application for Linux servers. It is based on IP tables and very well block a decent level of attacks. Our CSF logs regularly blocks (first temporarily for some time and then if attack/invalid connection attempt continues then permenant block) and we get notified.

Few details from an email i received today! 🙂

109.111.112.178 (AD/Andorra/mx2.andorsoft.ad) blocked for port scanning
      Time: Wed Nov 9 20:56:53 2016 +0400
      IP: 109.111.112.178 (AD/Andorra/mx2.andorsoft.ad)
      Hits: 11
      Blocked: Temporary Block

22.117.160.65 (TW/Taiwan/122-117-160-65.HINET-IP.hinet.net) blocked for port scanning
      Time: Wed Nov 9 18:53:12 2016 +0400
      IP: 122.117.160.65 (TW/Taiwan/122-117-160-65.HINET-IP.hinet.net)
      Hits: 11
      Blocked: Permanent Block

CSF has also option to block the entire country, however they warn that using country-level filtering will negatively impact performance and you will notice slower response times on your websites. This is due to the sheer size of the CIDR range lists (the list for the U.S. is 621K in plain text and contains more than 37,000 entries) and the fact that the firewall must check each incoming IP address against the chosen list(s).

Another feature i really like is the option to perform a basic security, stability and settings. A sample screenshot of a server check. Green ones are ok the the pink ones to be fixed.

      XyqiBmx.png

On the latest version it even has an option to send scheduled reports on this security check as new versions could have more checks.

Had no idea that Mac OSX had a native hypervisor framework built in.

Hypervisor is available on Mac OSX from Yosemite.

      https://developer.apple.com/library/content/releasenotes/MacOSX/WhatsNewInOSX/Articles/MacOSX10_10.html
Hypervisor (Hypervisor.framework). The Hypervisor framework allows virtualization vendors to build virtualization solutions on top of OS X without needing to deploy third-party kernel extensions (KEXTs). Included is a lightweight hypervisor that enables virtualization of the host CPUs.

    • RE: Auto-scale Drupal site: AWS or Azure

So hit a roadblock about code deploy. This was taken considering we update the files. Later realized that we might have user generated content/content added by admin via the Drupal CMS backened. In that case those files for example images will be saved on the one particular EC2 and during a scale down the instance could go down, or may not be available in the newly booted up instance.

Luckily Amazon have another service called Elastic File System used for such cases! I now moved the sites folder of drupal to EFS.

So basic Drupal core files on the EC2 AMI image i created, plus sites folder on EFS, with auto enabling that on each loaded instance by adding the below script:

      #cloud-config
      package_upgrade: true
      packages:
      - nfs-utils
      runcmd:
      - mkdir -p /var/www/html/efs-mount-point/
      - chown ec2-user:ec2-user /var/www/html/efs-mount-point/
      - echo "$(curl -s http://169.254.169.254/latest/meta-data/placement/availability-zone).file-system-id.efs.aws-region.amazonaws.com:/ /var/www/html/efs-mount-point nfs4 nfsvers=4.1,rsize=1048576,wsize=1048576,hard,timeo=600,retrans=2 0 0" >> /etc/fstab
      - mount -a -t nfs4

I am hoping to do a video tutorial this weekend about the whole setup
