To my understanding, no, you are required to use their device for static IP capability on their network. You can push very hard to get them to bridge it in true bridge mode though.

I figured. I suppose I just have to find the right support guy at Comcast to do this for me.

Why do you want a static IP?

I knew someone would ask that. Mainly for a few reasons:

      1. VPN on my ERL for remote connection to the office network.
      2. Ability to whitelist the IP address on remote servers.
      3. Hosting some internal services that we expose to the internet.

And you are hosting services from your LAN?

Just non-production services. We use our system at our office as a lab and POC test bed.

I'm getting quotes on new service from Comcast. Business Class cable is what we're going with. 75/15 for $99. If you want a static IP, they charge $14.95/month for the modem, plus $19.95 for 1 static, or $25 for 5 statics.

      2 things:

      <rant>

      1. Charging this much for an IP is outrageous.
      2. Making me rent a crappy Comcast modem just to obtain a static IP is ridiculous.
        </rant>

And now 1 more thing... I want to make sure I am getting the best modem from them that I can be. I am familiar with their big huge all in one gateway devices, that has wireless in it that broadcasts xfinity wifi, etc on it. I don't really like those boxes. Is there a specific, pure modem that is recommended that they can provide if you "ask the right questions?"

Yeah, the interface that I am seeing online doesn't look that great. I'm surprised there is not better documentation on this out there.

    • Watchguard M200

Does anyone here have any documentation regarding how to disable SIP-ALG on a Watchguard device? The documentation on the internet seems lacking. I've never used a Watchguard before, and I don't have one in front of me to mess around with and figure out.

I'm really into military books. Although it takes me months to finish 1 book, because I lose interest in "reading for fun" so often.

We started testing MS Teams for our group chats. I'm not overly impressed yet, but I haven't really put it through the paces yet. One thing I really like about teams is the continuous chat log.

Looked at that, was not impressed.

Yeah, I wouldn't say I'm impressed either. We just are giving it an evaluation because it comes with our licensing.

But in the past CentOS was there as a direct option. We used it and have customer still using it.

I wonder if MS will offer a base image again in the future with their new "commitment to Linux" claim.

Their commitment was never to CentOS. Ubuntu and Suse.

      Ahh, missed that detail.

Makes sense. Although I'd avoid it in production so not sure what the lab value would be.

I like to poke around Azure from time to time in order to keep up to date in regards to what is available on that platform . As you know, things change so rapidly in the cloud space, that it's easy to become unaware of what is actually available.

Easy answer, though, is don't use Azure. Why are you testing there?

I have some credits, and wanted to see what is available. Just personal/lab stuff.

Those are just random third party images.

That's what I was thinking too. I did read an article where you could upload your own image/VHD file and create a VM from that file. But that seems like a really unnecessary process just to get a basic Linux box running on their platform.

    • Azure & "CentOS based" Compute node

So has anyone else tried to deploy a CentOS server to Azure? I was looking around Azure today, just to see what is possible in regards to a basic, minimal install of CentOS, and it looks like the only things that are available in regards to CentOS are things that are "CentOS-Based". I haven't been able to find much information about what that means exactly.

I'm not looking to put a CentOS production workload in Azure, but I am curious as to what these "CentOS-Based" options actually mean. Anyone have any knowledge of this?

@scottalanmiller Right, they can't get to the point where performance suffers. One way I could see that happening is if they "over-provision" their equipment.

What do you specifically mean by "staying viable?"

At some point they cut the cost so much that there is no profit in it.

      Right, that would be terrible.

Which when you are selling things at $2.50, can happen all too easily.

      Exactly.
