Charitable donations

If I have some equipment that wouldn't be worth the trouble to sell, would it be worth my time to donate it to a charity or non-profit? By "worth my time", I mean would I be able to take a significant tax write off for the value of the gear? How would that value be calculated? I hate to throw stuff away when donating it could help my tax situation.

Generally no. Back when I used to do that it wasn't even worth the time of writing up the donation.

Well, crap. I know I don't want to bother with trying to sell the stuff, but what about dropping it off at goodwill and asking for a receipt for $xxx?

That might be the easiest option.

I buy our old computers and nuke/pave them back to factory and donate them to the local women's charity (just happened to be the closest one to my house).
edit: I don't ask for a tax receipt or anything, though maybe I'll inquire next time.
