I am rather surprised to see such an Ubuntu-heavy list, basically this is nothing but Ubuntu with five slightly different desktop options. It's surprising to not see Solus, Deepin, OpenSuse, Fedora or Ubuntu itself on the list.

Well I've installed Elementary before and while it was nice looking, I had quite a few issues. Nothing serious, but it just seemed very buggy.
I think a lot of these reviews just review the well known names. I think a lot of it has to do with people still believing that Ubuntu has better hardware support than others. That was true in like 2009, but not today. I've had much better performance out of stock Fedora Workstation than any Ubuntu distro I've tried (excluding things like Lubuntu, I mean full DE's).
I think a big thing that Ubuntu has going for them is PPAs. People who have no idea how this stuff works can just copy and paste an
add-apt-repsitory ppa:/yadayada
. The downside to that is all of the unmanaged PPAs that have broken and insecure code (or even malicious) that exist. -
I think that the YUM repo adding system is even easier than the PPAs.
