Any Experience with DreamHost?

Has anyone worked with DreamHost? Their pricing and features look really good. I don't know if I'd want to use them for primary production hosting but we do a lot of hosting and have lots of sites and internal apps and things. It seems like a decent provider.

Web hosting. None of that stuff that you list. Dreamhost is $9/mo unlimited hosting. "Unlimited" is never unlimited, but it doesn't have strict caps and we don't have any high volume sites or anything, just lots of them and would like flexibility to quickly make (and destroy) sites with minimal overhead. This seems like a cheap and easy way to have that rather than running everything on our own web servers which we do now. NTG doesn't do commercial webhosting, all hosting is just for us, and is on enterprise servers in top datacenters, so for the production workloads it is great. And we have CDN too. But for the long tail of small sites, projects, one-offs and stuff that we tend to do, it would be nice to have a low cost web host that could do that stuff easily.

Yeah, straight up "web" hosting, there's no margin in that. We haven't done that since the DataReturn days, simply because it's not worth the effort.
We can spin you up a server to host a site, you can do whatever you want with that.

We already have platforms for that and lots of servers. It's specifically that that we are looking to avoid.

Well the first month is a free trial so we are testing it out. Really can't go wrong with a free trial and only $9/mo.

Oh.... and it is a bait and switch. Dreamhost fail. It isn't $9 per month but $108/year. Dreamhost's rep on Spiceworks even stepped in and said that it was only $9/mo but it isn't. Calling it that is really a scam. It's not quite a lie, sort of, but it sort of it. If something is $9/mo and you buy one month, you expect to pay $9, not $108. Sure the next eleven months are free, and that's not horrible, but there is quite a difference between $9/mo and an average of $9/mo when you buy by the year.
Why not make it a decade at a time. Then if you wanted one month of service it would be $1,080. Something about it being a year must make them think that the bait and switch is minor enough that they could get away with it. Well, they didn't this time.

Dedicated hosting box isn't bad but by default they don't put mysql on the box and instead push people for a second vps for mysql/use shared mysql. Update the wiki for installing mysql on the same box for those that want it faster, cms db calls still not very good.Shared is what I'm using because it was free... But they didn't see any latency issues apparently with having web host in westcoat and assigned shared mysql in Virginia.... Took years to catch that and get it moved to the same state, still not sure if even in the same datacenter.
Next complaint was some big outages ( have to admit though they seem to be holding reliability better over that past year).
So far their pricing has kept me but the downtime awhile back and limited support is fairly irritating.

Thanks. Management was pretty unhappy about the pricing practices and the reports haven't been super good so I think we are going to avoid them. We are only looking at the shared service only, our VPS come from Rackspace and Azure.
Bluehost is a bit cheaper. Taking a look at them.
