You can get small AM/FM transmitters that will plug into your phone with a headphone jack. Win/Win because you get to use the existing stereo and it's super tiny.

While that transmitter might work, you said that the speaker isn't that loud.
Can you install power terminals somewhere so you can provide power to the speaker? Or probably as good, is there a cigarette lighter you can use to provide power to a speaker unit?
Something like this or a Beats Pill XL might be loud enough for what you want.

Speakers in the car itself are fairly good, I meant the car itself engine/road noise isn't loud. It is just getting extremely hard to find a decent AM station around us.
There is a 12v cigarette outlet in the car. It is an older car so not sure how much spare power the alternator can actually push.

If you're happy with Mono from AM and the speakers in the car are loud enough - looks like Matt provided a great solution.

I looked that up, not sure if that does the AM band as well. It looks like it only does FM.

@coliver I'm sure you can find one that does AM, I had an ancient Oldsmobile and that's how I solved that same issue.
