Best Practices When Using Public WiFi
-
- Never connect to a public or guest wireless network again... Buy a personal hotspot and keep it charged and on your person at all times....
Ok, so thats not really the best of advice sometimes. Maybe you are in a place where you can't use your hotspot (like maybe a plane), or perhaps the hotspot died, or maybe you just can't afford one. There are a lot of reasons why someone may not be able to use a personal hotspot. In situations like those it's always good to follow a few best practices when using public WiFi.

Always connect to a trusted VPN so all traffic is secured?

"You really shouldn’t be accessing your banking information or really anything that requires credentials when your on public Wi-Fi."
Why not? Or to put it another way, what are the risks to using HTTPS? How does it fail?

Use HTTPS/SSL with certs that are from a trusted Root CA. That is if the information matters.

It can only fail if two conditions are met. DNS poisting to move the website, however this would have to be a new website you've never visited before because CA's will not issues the cert for a domain to someone else. Which means the same vulnerability exists when using your home connections. It must be a trusted/known site and be HTTPS.
