Yes, you can do it. But the compression is happening in software. What value is the hardware providing, in that case?

What hardware device have you been testing out?

From the above point for video conference ,cloud based will be suite as it doesn't required to purchase any dedicated hardware and can be used in any device. But am concern with the room conference camera ,as hardware will have a high resolution camera which cover the whole team in a conference room, but how we can integrate that to the software or cloud based solution

Polycom HDX 7000 hardware device as hardware
Polycom real presence desktop as software to have VC for remote desktop user. -

Cloud is handy, but you already ruled out anything hosted. So doesn't that mean that "cloud" could only mean running your own gear in a colo? And that means that you are dealing with all dedicated hardware again.

I don't follow. Hardware or software doesn't change the resolution of the camera.

Are you asking how you attach the camera in your conference room to the cloud based software?
I'd think it would be thought the PC that hosts that camera which is running both the cloud software, for example Skype, and camera driver.
@scottalanmiller comment about no needing hardware is, I think, meaning that you don't need special exclusive branded hardware to do the video conferencing, you just use a commodity PC/laptop as the interface to the software and other commodity hardware (microphones/cameras, etc).

Right, meaning compression and gateways that run in software not in firmware.

Thanks all for the comments and suggestion.
. I will do a test based on the suggestions and will update.

@sreekumarpg did you manage to do the tests?

Hey guys
I am currently working on to setup conference rooms connecting our 3 offices, and thinking of keeping it simple by using Skype!
We have MAC minis spare @ our office, so planning to set that and connect to our conference room TVs, and setup a generic account. Map the network drive with one folder where everyone can drop in their files that needs for their meeting. Reason for MAC is we have some users with keynotes.
The audio will be through the SONOS speaker system which is used in the conference room already.
Now looking for good MIC and Cameras. I think the camera should be a wide angle HD camera and MIC is possible a wifi with USB dongle, that I can connect to the MAC and keep the mic at the center of the table so it is accessible for everyone. (With noise cancellation for sure)
Camera, I am thinking of:
And Mic xTag USB
Suggestions please
