Strong Museum of Play: Video game Exhibit
-
@coliver One of my all time favourite museums. It is a collection of homes and buildings from the early American era that have been moved into an enormous outdoor museum (along with a few traditional museum structures there too and a nineteenth century gazebo and town square thing.)
It's a great thing to do in the late spring or early fall with elementary age kids on up. Lots of walking, lots of fresh air, really cool buildings, living exhibits (live pottery making and that sort of thing.) Expect to put in a complete day there. So much fun.

@scottalanmiller Cool, will have to make an effort to get over there this summer if we have time. I love museums, whereas my fiance is more of a fresh air and fun kind of person. So this would be a good compromise. It sounds a lot like the Hanford Mills Museum (http://www.hanfordmills.org) and the Cooperstown Farmers Museum (http://www.farmersmuseum.org/).

We've done the Cooperstown Farmer's Museum twice in the past year. The GCVM is like 100 Farmer's Museums put together. It's the same style but the scale is completely different. The GCVM has actually assembled an entire village with streets, central square, etc. You need a map. You really get immersed, you never see the road (well you do, but it's distant.) You really go back in time, not just look at some old houses next to each other.
Same idea, but very different too.

The food there is awesome too! I live about 15 minutes from there. The property that it is on is beautiful and also has a nature center as part of the complex.
-
Also highly recommended for people in the Upstate NY region, take a drive to Ottawa and cross the border into Quebec for the Canadian Museum of Civilization. Best indoor museum I've ever seen.

Awesome, she loves the Farmer's Museum (we live 30 minutes from Cooperstown). I will have to get her to go with me to this one.

We have also done Fort Niagara which is a fun indoor/outdoor museum and then the falls after. Lots of history in this area of NYS to explore.

Didn't do Fort Niagara, but did do the Falls and then went and hiked Letchworth. Ended up being a fantastic weekend. Will keep the Fort on my list of things to do if we get to that part of the state in the future.
This is great if you guys can think of anything else let me know, I love seeing the history and natural wonders of NYS.

The locks in Lockport were fun to explore too. There are many parts of the Erie Canal that are cool to explore.

@dominica's parents live one block off of the canal. The kids do things on the canal regularly (like fireworks, food, ice cream, etc.) We'd like to do some serious canal history stuff.
For those interested, watch How the West Was Won which talks about the canal, Utica and some of its influence towards the beginning of the classic film.

@Minion-Queen, @art_of_shred, @Mike-Ralston, @Eric and I all grew up right at Letchworth. Letchworth was a part of daily life, you would sometimes drive through it as a short cut! My girls went there to see the canyon, falls and dam just a couple months ago.

Albright-Knox in Buffalo is a world class modern art museum, very well known.
-
If not looking to do stuff with kids, stay in either Ithaca or Watkins Glen for a weekend and do the Finger Lakes Wine Trail (the real ones are Seneca, Cayuga and Keuka Lakes.) Learn about the region, explore the foodie culture and learn all about wine making. (Beer and mean made along the trail too.)

Yes we spend tons of time at Letchworth. The small museum there is nice as well. Not a lot there but still good. In the fall we love driving through there. Right now you cant get far though as they don't plow the snow out.

Yep, we've done the trail and more. I love "downtown" Ithaca. Very artsy. Watkins Glen is nice to walk around, although not during racing season. This is great info, will be planning more weekends.

@dominica and I met while living in Ithaca.

Speaking of Letchworth Park a pic of the falls today (crazy people hiking in this bitter cold!)
-
Speaking of museums, our kids are slated to hit the Prado this spring with their mom.

Nuts. I just saw that Niagara is starting to freeze over too!

Yup had friends that live up there say they can play hockey on part of the river (first time they have ever seen it frozen).
