Not a good idea to eat clown fish. They taste funny...
Yeah, I'll show myself out. -

You know why because the prison has the incentive to feed the prisoners healthy meals. Healthy meals = less sick inmates. Also, who cares if the inmates complain. They are just inmates. Trust me I worked in corrections for six years. Schools have to contend with how well the students like the food.

@penguinwrangler Id disagree and say who cares about what food kids like? They havent earned it. Let them eat that garbage, esp if parents are too stupid/lazy to give them worthwhile food. Also, who in the world likes elementary school food? It is the worst food of all time. Horse meat and sawdust sandwiches...

Nah... We got good food in elementary school. Middle School was so-so... Highschool is where they broke out the horse meat & sawdust... Oh, and don't forget the Concussion biscuits.

Agreed. Schools should be run more like prisons and less like special snowflake conventions. But then they would need teachers and administrators who are willing to take responsibility for their actions, so obviously it will never happen.

it would also require for the teachers and administration to be proper adults and not just kids who didn't want to grow up.

@nerdydad good point. I'm still going to hold on to my pipe dream.

I disagree. Children shouldn't have to suffer just because their parents are lazy.
They should be able to eat healthy food in school even if their parents give them trash.
If you feed them right, they'll love healthy foods.
I do understand that if a child only eats trash at home, and is then presented with healthy food at school, the child will no way want to eat the healthy food. But they can learn to eat it at school, just like they can learn to do the math they don't want to do because they have nobody encouraging them at home.
On the other side, preparing healthy meals for your child to take to school requires work and planning, and would be nice if you could rely on the school not feeding your child trash if you want a break.

The issue is, what would you define as good food? Healthy food can taste really bad, be super good for you but taste bad (okay unhealthy food can taste bad too). I am not saying all healthy food taste bad or vice versa but a lot of people both kids and adults won't eat "healthy" food. My oldest stepson (he is 17) is having medical problems because he won't eat right. We bought him a nutribullet told him to mix up his veggies with some fruit and just gulp it down fast. He won't do it. The answer to his problem is better nutrition but he won't do it.
In the school setting kids come back and say they didn't eat lunch and the parents are mad because they don't serve food the kids want to eat. Then parents are complaining to the principal about this and they are trying to deal with it. However the principal is worried about the test results and honestly just wants to keep the parents quiet, so they can focus on what is important. Hence, even though they would like to tackle this issue it isn't that important to them. Honestly, it isn't that important to our society. Until we demand better nutrition all around, it won't come to our schools. We need to demand that they take out sugar from everything. However, they put sugar into everything because of the low-fat idea. Take out fat and add sugar. Also sugar is addictive so people will crave the food, a win for the food companies.

They put sugar into everything to make it taste sweet. The whole U.S. society is addicted to everything being so damn sweet and tasty or they won't eat it....
Healthy food doesn't taste bad at all... it's just that there wasn't a ton of artificial taste and sweetness added to it, that we're all so used to.
Any food can taste bad if not made well, not just healthy foods.

They put sugar into everything to make it addictive. I believe it is that sinister. Honestly, it is as bad as tobacco companies when they denied (even after knowing it) that smoking causes cancer. They are now linking Alzheimer's to insulin resistance in the brain. Also, a lot of health diseases are linked to sugar now. The big food companies should be held liable. Only 10 companies control almost every large food and beverage brand in the world.*

Completely agree.

I've seen that too. I also seen that ADHD and Alzheimer's are linked, as well as sugar and ADHD.

There is a real solution to the "my kids won't eat X"... Give them what everybody else is eating at home. With mine, we usually give him a snack at bed time. If he didn't eat supper, guess what the snack is?
I mostly agree with you, mostly,@PenguinWrangler. I think parents being irate that their kid didn't eat lunch is like them being mad because the sky is blue. When my kiddo started kindergarten, we told him to eat what they had for lunch (and we tell him this at home too), that he doesn't have to like it, but he has to eat it After coming home ravenous a few times, and having to wait for supper, he clued in on the fact that he could choose to eat lunch, or he could choose to be hungry.
It's important , I think, to let kids make their own choices so they learn that choices have consequences. It will serve them well later on.
I'm also all for food that tastes good. You can get the tastes good without all the sugar, it just costs more, and costing more just isn't going to work for our school system as it sits now.
I've already started teaching my son to pay attention to what his body tells him... another skill I think more folks can use.

Our school district (Schaumburg School District 54) does not serve lunch. You have to send them with one.
There are no cafeterias in the elementary schools. They eat in the classroom.
The junior high has a cafeteria, but still no food. High school is a different district.

huh - who'd thunk it?

@dafyre I need to do a better job at this. I agree with your methods. My kids eat junk every day. Partly it comes from the wife who would rather not deal with them so that makes it harder. Partly it comes from me because I let them and her do it. Wife now has diabetes so you would think she would listen to me now...

We're pretty lucky. Emilia would rather eat fruits and veggies over chocolate or crackers, at least so far.
