Getting tested for sleep apnea this week. First an at home test and then a sleep study. My doctor seems to think I may have it due to my energy levels after blood tests, etc came back good.

Good luck. I ended up with a CPAP, best thing ever.

I can only upvote this once damit! Also...a CPAP device could save your life! Sleep apnea is a strong contributor to heart arrhythmias (I know this one personally).

Or to just suffocation. That's the bigger issue with me. No CPAP, and I just stop breathing completely.

What if you just know that you have sleep apnea, can you just buy a cpap? Are there universal Cpaps? Is there any danger?

Not in the US. They are classified as a "medicine" in order to funnel more money to the "system". You are forced to pay doctors for no reason, forced to pay extremely high CPAP fees for no reason. This is literally a time where a ticket to another country can be paid for by the reduction in costs in acquiring the "medicine" you need. The flights can be so cheap, that the cost savings on the CPAP will pay for your vacation.

There is no danger as long as you set the CPAP to a reasonably amount. Don't just set it above nine and go crazy. Set at five, see if it works, edge it up as needed. Don't be silly, but it's like drinking water. As long as you don't do some drinking challenge to see how many gallons of water you can drink in one day, it's safe to buy and drink all the water you want.

Hurting yourself with a CPAP would hurt, instantly. Your CPAP should not hurt, it should feel great.

CPAPs are universal. Basically they are the same everywhere. There are about three main types (unidirection, bidirection, bidirectional variable.) The second type almost never exists because the third type covers it, so why manufacture the extra device. The first type is rare, for the same reason. All CPAPs measure in barometric pressure, so that part is universal, too.

Don't CPAP have filters and such that need to be replaced regularly? How do you obtain these?

You may buy a filter and tubing in some states when teh parts are separate and cannot be combined to make a CPAP.

But in most states, like Texas, all parts are individually considered medicine and are only obtainable through a prescription from a doctor.

That was my understanding as well. . .

So unless you're ordering from Alibaba or some such website outside of most jurisdiction I don't see how one could have the parts to "build their own" CPAP. . .

CPAP sucks. I have to have it though. I go to this site to get my supplies. Cheaper than insurance. http://www.thecpapshop.com/

I have an oral appliance but I use it in conjunction with my CPAP, that is how bad mine is. However, when I travel I just use the oral appliance. Easier to travel with.

Oh yeah, buying in cash was like 25% the cost of buying with insurance for me. Insurance made it SO expensive.

                                            (Hypothetical)

Let's say you are the sole bread winner, have a wife + children and get laid off. You learn of a job opportunity that you can take but in order to get said job you must lie somewhat about your qualifications. Let's say for the sake of the argument that it's 100% certain that you must lie in order to get the position. Essentially your options are lying to provide for your family or having character and being an honest person, but your family may go somewhat without.

I've been thinking about this stuff a lot lately. What is more right? My inclination would be honesty, but is it really right when I would be deciding on behalf of other people whom I am responsible for?
