Linux Gaining Ground at Window's Expense

For many years the claim was that Linux was only eating the market of other UNIX operating systems like Solaris and AIX. Certainly it was and continues to do so (see the other post about how IBM's market is rapidly vanishing) but Linux is taking significant market share from Windows as well, at least for the last three years.

I'm not 110% sure how to read the graph as the total does not add up to 100% and leaves out many other OSes like Solaris, AIX, the BSD family, HP-UX, OpenVMS and more.

My impression is that the chart is not of Linux vs Windows deployments but of "companies deploying mission critical apps to" each of these. As many use both, the overlap could make sense.

It's not very suprising that a near monopoly would decrease with any new competition but it does put a smile on my face. As a long time win-admin I do consider it a threat to my occupation and more fuel to the "learn linux" fire. I think a bit of good competition will make Microsoft products better which is a win for most everyone.

As someone focusing heavily on Linux in most of my life, it's a big boost for me. Linux jobs are in big abundance with very little competition.

Interesting the reason why i really need to set my time to learn Linux well..
uh i wish i could work 8 hours a day and the remaining time is for learning other stuff

The market for Linux just keeps growing and growing. One of the healthiest IT job markets today.

Yes, I see just a ridiculous amount of Linux work out there in all sectors.
