They make it easy to do. Few convenient clicks. I'm on the suggested list of people to follow. High up on that list. @scottalanmiller is at the top, which is why he has something like 6,000 followers.

Not really, they put so much effort into making it obvious that you want to follow people (I don't even know what that does) that I think the newbies have little other direction as to what to do when they first join.
