Ryzen 3900x vs 5600x
-
As some of you may know I bought a pre built gaming system for gaming and crypto mining.
I spec'ed some things low like 8gb ram and 7200 rpm hard drive. Yes you can buy a $3k desktop with a spinning disk and 8gb of RAM
So I bought 32gb of RAM and 1TB NVME and things will be great once I get the system... Except I have another bottleneck
The ryzen 5600x is an awesome processor, but it only has 6 cores. Not o problem if I plan on running a single OS, but I really want to run Ubuntu as host and run windows as VM. Even just doing that spreading out those cores will hurt performance.
So for under $500 I can get a Ryzen 3900x, which has 12 cores.

I can get $300-350 for used Ryzen 5600x. So for about $200 net I can upgrade from 6 cores to 12 cores.
And yes my motherboard is compatible with both series... Is there anything I'm not thinking about here that may be a reason not to do this?

@irj Just curious - do you want to mine while gaming?
-
@irj - If you don't mind me asking, as I was trying to spec out a build earlier this morning only to hit the road block of no GPU's, where did you find a prebuilt? Or was this a while back?

With alienware they estimate about a month build time, but mine is coming sooner. My expected ship date was May 4, but mine just shipped today

No. I wouldn't be able to do that. But I would like to be able to do productivity tasks while mining

@irj Nice. Since I left that comment I bought a pre-built as a graduation gift to myself as it seems the only way to get anything at the moment. I went with the 3900X / Radeon RX 6700XT combo. I got about a 6 week wait though.
One thing I would consider, if you haven't thought about it already, in relation to your original question is your power consumption. I noticed the 3900X is 105W whereas the 5600X is only 65W.

Unfortunately I found out my motherboard is not backwards compatible so I will be sticking with 5600x for a little while. I woolf eventually like to upgrade to a 5900x when I can find one for MSRP. The upgrade cost from Dell was more than Msrp on 5900x so I will just wait.
I have a 1000watt PSU so CPU power consumption shouldn't matter much for me.
