I've done this to myself before as a boss. I've started to ask a question because I'm curious, and tell someone to start doing some tasks to satisfy my curiosity. Then, as I realize that there is no value returned in what I'm asking I have to back track and take it all back.

This is like an extension of "goal level thinking". Stay focused on the goal when asking questions.
